Syracuse vs. Boston College
November 30, 2013
Carrier Dome, Syracuse, N.Y.
Boston College Head Coach Steve Addazio
Opening Statement:
“It was a very disappointing loss. Give credit to Syracuse. They had to go down the field, 75 yards with two minutes and no timeouts, and they were able to do that. They played very hard today. I thought we played hard today. Without Andre (Williams) in the second half, really in the first half he was hurting, but the kids fought really hard… I just thought we battled on the road and we came up short, 12 seconds, that’s the tail of the game. As I told the seniors and the team in there, this is the loss that hurts, it hurts because our team is learning how to become a highly-competitive, big-time team, and a loss like that rips their guts out, as it would to that style of team. As I said to them, we want to hold our heads up high when walk out of here. It is going to rip our guts and it should and it will be great motivation to get our eighth win in a bowl game. That’s what we are going to do. We are going to learn from this loss and we are going to walk forward with it. That’s the message to the team. I’m proud of our seniors, I’m proud of the competitiveness and the toughness of our football team. (We) overcame some tough situations today, I am very proud of them. Syracuse became bowl eligible, another ACC team that will be playing in postseason play, which we want all of our ACC teams to play, so hats off to them.”
On the rivalry:
“It is a great rivalry, probably only the older kids in both locker rooms really know it but now they all know it and it will become a great East Coast rivalry talked about in the locker room. That’s what fuels great rivalries and I think it is great for college football so I think that point got made pretty clearly.”
On Andre Williams’ injury:
“He was hurting, he was hurt right from the beginning. He took a shot early on that same shoulder and was trying to go and just couldn’t go and he couldn’t run with that force and certainly not going to put him in harm’s way. That’s not right, and he was very disappointed, but I thought the rest of the team stepped up and we had a really good second half and we played really well.”
On Syracuse’s defense:
“I thought Syracuse’s defense did a great job but they had a lot of guys on the line of scrimmage and that’s why we hit those play-action passes. That’s what we needed to do and that’s what we did. We knew that would be the case. With us sometimes it takes a while to figure out the way they are trying to load us and defend us. Once I thought we got a handle on it at halftime, I think we got our running game back going and we complimented with our throwing game and did some really good things on offense.”
On Syracuse’s final drive and whether he thought Boston College had the win:
“Obviously they played their hearts out today. We can’t let a team go down for 75 yards, that can’t happen. We have to make them get off the field, we have to make a play, that’s what it is. Defense is the tip of the sphere for our football program. We win with a great defense, we have to find a way to not allow them to go 75 yards with two minutes left. That’s just the way it is.”
On the second half plan:
“Sometimes what happens when people roll the box on us we have to figure out the right way to attack it. I thought we had a great plan and we knew how to attack it and we were mixing our play-action passes, and that’s what happens. Honestly, in our minds we have to win this game in the fourth quarter, that’s what we had to do and we fell short by 12 seconds. It didn’t happen, but I mean that’s who we are, that’s the way we play, sometimes we have to start slow and Andre (Williams) never got a chance to be a part of that second half surge.”
Chase Rettig, Senior, Quarterback
On how their game plan changed after Andre Williams’ injury:
“Got to keep the same game plan, got to get the next guy in there and got to try the best you can to fill in his spot.”
On the Boston College offense:
“They (coaching staff) called the plays that were there and we executed them. We made some big plays and put ourselves in position to score some touchdowns.”
On the late game pass to FB Jake Sinkovec:
“That was our guy in the progression, so he was the guy who was open. I threw it to him. You can’t play that aggressive in that situation. If something goes wrong then you’re still going to be up by four if you kick a field goal. So a lot goes into that call and that’s what happened, that’s the way it unfolded.”
Steele Devitto, Senior Linebacker
On his interception:
“They were just running a bubble slant all game so coach put us in the right position and made a play on the ball.”
On the defense’s inability to stop Syracuse on third down:
“You’ve just got to execute. They (Syracuse) played really hard, credit to them, played their tails off. We played really hard as well, but the first half we had some really poor tackling and you can’t have that on defense, especially when you play a heavy run team.”
On Syracuse quarterback Terrel Hunt:
“They had a good quarterback. He didn’t run as much out of the pocket as we’ve seen on tape, but he did a really good job finding escape lanes and he knew that pressure was coming too. He did a good job today and hats off to the way he played.”
Myles Willis, Freshman, Running Back
On his performance:
“That’s what I always practice for, have to be ready. Andre (Williams) is a great back, but you always have to be ready. He takes a lot of carries, a lot of wear and tear on his body. So I knew that sometime this year the opportunity was going to come.”
On getting knocked out of bounds on the final drive.
“That’s something I’ve got to live with. Not only did I not get in the end zone, but also if I could have fell in bounds I could have been able to work more clock down. That’s just something I guess to keep in the back of my mind as I prepare during the summer as I get ready for next year.”
On quarterback Chase Rettig:
“Chase was amazing. That’s our quarterback right there and he made big plays. The run, the option, something I know Syracuse wasn’t prepared for and then that goal line where he jumped into the end zone, that’s just big plays.”
