Student Athlete Quotes
Syracuse vs. Wake Forest
November 2, 2013
Carrier Dome, Syracuse, N.Y.
Terrel Hunt, Sophomore, Quarterback
On the additional role for wide receiver Brisly Estime:
“It’s very important because it takes a lot of off of me, I could throw a bubble out there and he’ll run an extra 20 yards. Just simple things like that. It adds on to the playmakers that we have. He’s a young guy, but he’s hungry. So it definitely helps a lot.”
On how much pride was on the line in the second half:
“It’s not even pride, we’re just hungrier. Coming off a bad loss like we did, we flush it down the toilet, we forgot about it and no one speaks on it. Really it was just being hungry. We knew where we belonged, and we knew what we had to do so it was a tough one in that first half and we got everything corrected out and finished out well in the second half.”
Jarrod West, Junior, Wide Receiver
On the touchdown pass he threw to Brisly Estime and what he saw:
“That play all week really didn’t work that well. We actually had a couple guys trying out to throw the ball and I wasn’t one of them that completed it. To get out there and complete the ball, I mean he was wide open and anybody could’ve thrown it.”
On why that same play worked today when it wasn’t going well before:
“I guess the defense just bit on the reverse, and he was wide open so I mean I could have kicked it to him.”
Isaiah Johnson, Freshman, Defensive Line
On the confidence level going into the game and after his first career interception:
“My confidence is always high. That’s not something that I worry about. I just have to blame this game on God and my coaches for giving me the opportunity to step up and do what I have to do. They say I can’t be a freshman all year so I had to step up with the big guys and that is what I did.”
On the defense’s game and how it feels to win after lost to Georgia Tech:
“It feels great. The defense, we haven’t been clicking all season. But now it seems like we are clicking and we understand each other more and we trust each other. Last night in the meeting, Coach Shafer said ‘we have to trust one another’ and that is what we did. I trust the offense. The offense trusts the defense and we just got it done today.”
On tough loss against Georgia Tech and what it means to the team to get the win against Wake Forest:
“It meant a lot, it was motivation and plus we had the bye week so we were itching to get back on the field. At practice this week we were hitting harder, we were going faster and we worked harder. That was just the difference. You give us a lost and a bye week that really builds up the momentum and the motivation because we were still mad. We are still mad right now. We are back to .500 but that means nothing to us. We want to go bowling. That’s what time it is now.”
Brisly Estime, Freshman, H-Back
On first touchdown of his career:
“It felt good. It was a blessing. I’ve been praying for this first touchdown.”
On what changed for the offense in the second half:
“We came out to play in the second half. The first half we weren’t clicking.”
On scoring on the trick play with Jarrod West:
“I knew it was going to work because of how their defense was playing.”
Sean Hickey, Junior, Offensive Tackle
On the sway from two weeks ago to now (69 point turnaround):
“For one we have to give credit to the defense, they played a very good game. Dominated. I think probably only three times they (Wake Forest) got across the fifty. On offense we were slow to begin with and a lot of the runs we were emphasizing throughout the week weren’t working and then we had a few runs we didn’t emphasize that were working. We decided to stick to that because we thought we would get more yards against the looks they were giving us and the runs turned out well. We opened holes up and the backs were running.”
On looking ahead at the next four games:
“I feel we are going to keep doing what we have been doing in terms of game plans. Obviously we are going to switch things up week to week. I could tell we have already adjusted during this game. We are going to have to continue making those adjustments throughout the season. We have to get after it—Maryland is a good ball club, we all know how good Florida State is. Pittsburgh is a pretty tough team and Boston College has been playing pretty good football. We have a tough stretch ahead of us, but I have faith in our team.”
Durell Eskridge, Sophomore, Free Safety
On Isaiah Johnson’s play as a freshman and what he told him:
“The funny thing I said to him (Isaiah Johnson) was ‘I have to get more interceptions. Now you have one and now I am battling everyone in the secondary. You made a great play.’ He made a good play as a freshman and to keep his momentum up and keep his momentum going, I was happy for him.”
On the secondary’s play, specially the three pass rushers and getting to quarterback Tanner Price:
“They put a lot of pressure on him (Tanner Price), so he could never sit in the pocket. He kept having to roll out and throw. When you have a quarterback doing that and looking for receivers down field and then we were holding down the receivers making sure they don’t get too deep, you are playing a good ball game. Our defensive line gave him a lot of pressure and he had to roll out of the pocket almost every play and we came out with the victory.”
Cameron Lynch, Junior, Linebacker
On the strength and depth of the linebacker core:
“It felt good to get out there and have everybody play.”
On how the Michael Campanaro (Wake Forest flanker) injury affected the game plan:
“That was their go to guy and they took him out of the game, so that was good for us to work on what we had to do, lock down all the inside passes and outside throws. We did a good job at that and I’m happy with what we did.”
On Jay Bromley’s play:
“It’s clutch. When you cover for a while, it’s like someone gets home. I’m glad he got home finally. He did a good job for us. “
Rob Trudo, Sophomore, Offensive Guard
On Jarrod West’s touchdown throw:
“During the week the scout team ran it so many times that they started to get a hang of it, which is one of the reasons it wasn’t working during the week. It was a great play and it paid off in the end.”
On West’s performance today:
“It’s good to see Jarrod get going. He’s become a playmaker for us this year and it’s good to see him come around. Looking forward to see him the rest of the season.”
On Riley Dixon:
“(Coach) Shafer was definitely comfortable with Riley Dixon. He was a punter and kicker in high school and has been kicking in practice. He’s a great punter.”
Chuck Bullough, Defensive Coordinator
On covering Wake Forest’s quarterback:
“We tried to flush him outside. He got outside a couple of times, but we designed it for him to get outside. We just tried to close the gaps off and make him go outside. We tried to play games with him in terms of whether he could run up the middle or run up the side.”
On Dyshawn Davis being back today:
“He did well. Most importantly he said afterwards that he felt good. It’s hard to come back from an injury like that. Feeling good after that first game is important.”
George McDonald, Offensive Coordinator
On the different formations:
“Every week there is a different defense, different team. We saw some things that we thought we could take advantage of. We’re always trying to simplify the plays, and we’re trying to get the ball into the playmakers’ hands.”
On why getting Brisly Estime the ball was an emphasis:
“He’s earned it. The biggest thing with Coach Shafer is you earn the right to play here. It’s not a guarantee and he’s done a good job every time he’s been out there. He’s a young guy and we always try to protect the young guys and make sure we bring them along at their own speed. He’s really started to grow and understand what we’re trying to get out of him. Today he did a good job and every time he’s out there he does a good job with the ball.”
