Wake Forest Quotes
Syracuse Football
Syracuse vs. Wake Forest
November 2, 2013
Carrier Dome, Syracuse, N.Y.
Head Coach Jim Grobe
On Syracuse's defense:
“I thought they did a really nice job. They tried to pressure us and we didn’t didn’t handle it very well. We worked on it all week, which is discouraging. I thought they had really good command and their guys played really, really good football.”
On the impact of losing flanker Michael Campanaro:
“It hurts us. Any time you lose a good player, most teams are like this all over the country, whenever you have your best player on one side of the ball it has a big effect. But, at the same time, I thought we had some self-inflicted wounds today especially in the first half. There were penalties, dropped balls, missed throws and missed protections. All of those things that had nothing to do with Mike Campanaro not being on the field. If he had been out there to generate balls for us maybe, but without Mike getting hurt, we didn’t play very good football. It has nothing to do with if Mike’s in or out.”
On the difference between this week and last week:
“Syracuse played really good football. They were well prepared and they did a good job. They did a nice job running the football today. I thought their defense for the most part played great today except for a couple plays. They gave up a couple of big plays, but other than that, they played really, really good. Unfortunately, the offense wasn’t able to handle it.”
On Sherman Ragland III:
“It’s going to be pretty spotty. When we look at cuts and balls, I think we missed routes, missed some communication stuff that we weren’t happy with. He’s just not been getting a lot of work and with the injuries, we had to put him in the game more than we wanted to.”
On punts:
“I think it’s a little bit of both (the defense being that good, or the offense being that bad). I really just felt like in the first half it was just good defense. Then in the second half they were able to do some things. They had some nice long runs and they did some good things to us. I felt like both teams played really good defense.”
On the overall team play:
“We had a lot of groups not play very well today. Our offensive line didn’t play very well. Our receivers as a group didn’t play very well. I’ve never played quarter back before, so I don’t know what that feels like if you’re not getting good protection, if you’re not having guys run the right routes. The most telling thing was how many times we didn’t give the defense a rest at all. We just put them right back out there.”
On the next couple of weeks:
“We’ve got a big one next week with the ‘Noles (Florida State) coming to town and this was a game we needed to win. I don’t think there’s a question about that. It’s not a game that we expected to win.
Wake Forest Player Quotes
Tanner Price, Senior, Quarterback
On the impact of losing wide receiver Michael Campanaro:
“It’s big whenever you lose a player like that. He’s a really good player and it definitely hurt us.”
On the Syracuse defense:
“We knew that going into the game they would blitz a lot and they did a good job of it.”
On the team’s performance:
“I think the defense played a great game. Offensively we just couldn’t put anything together. I think it really hurt us losing Camp (Michael Campanaro), that probably has a lot to do with it.”
On his performance:
“I don’t think I played very well. I had a number of missed throws and I have to play a lot better than that.”
Nikita Whitlock, Senior, Nose Guard
On whether the team felt a letdown after losing Michael Campanaro to injury:
“Honestly, I didn’t even know he was out until close to the second half. I saw him go down, I figured he was going to be out a few series, come back in, that kind of thing. I don’t really know. I know the defense really felt good, we played er;;. I don’t know if the offense had any adverse effects to that. I’m sure they did. It’s always hard losing one of your weapons. We just have to get at it this week and figure out what we’ll do without him. “
On Wake Forest’s defensive performance:
“I think the defense did well. You hold an opponent to 13 (points), you know you have to score some points to win. Not saying it’s our offense. We didn’t get any take backs, I don’t know how we did on third down as a defense. We could have done more as a defense to win but you can’t be upset with 13.”
