The Syracuse volleyball team opened up the Syracuse Invitational on Friday night at the Women's Building, opening the Syracuse Invitational with a 3-1 win over FDU.

Kiernan Stamey paced the Orange attack with a match-high 19 kills on .302 hitting, adding nine digs and a block. Abby Nicholson tallied 12 kills on a .478 clip to go with three service aces and three block assists. Emma Williams added 13 kills and led all players with four aces. Setter Charis Burge ran the offense to the tune of 49 assists while also tying for the team lead in digs with 12, matched by Yuka Urano, who added three assists and two aces of her own.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Syracuse took an early lead in set one, building an early cushion before FDU trimmed it to a single point at 9-10. The Orange answered immediately, reeling off a stretch that pushed the lead back out to seven, and closed out the frame comfortably, 25-14.

Set two flipped the script. Syracuse built a six-point lead at 6-12, but FDU used a run fueled by a pair of service aces to erase the deficit and take the lead, going up 17-13. The two teams traded the rest of the but FDU closed out the set and tied the match, 26-24.

FDU took a lead early in set three, building a 10-6 lead. Syracuse chipped away, tying the set three separate times before back-to-back Abby Nicholson aces put the Orange within two. FDU wouldn't go away, forcing a tie at 24-24 in the extended frame, but Syracuse finished the set on top, 26-24, to regain the match lead.

The fourth set was tight through a 5-5 deadlock before Syracuse pulled away for good. The Orange built their lead steadily into double digits and never let FDU get closer than eight points down the stretch, sealing the match with a Stamey kill to close it out, 25-15.

NOTES AND HIGHLIGHTS

Kiernan Stamey led all players with 19 kills, a career high, hitting .302 on the night.
Abby Nicholson posted a team-best .478 hitting percentage on 12 kills, adding 3 aces and 3 block assists.
Emma Williams led the match with 4 service aces to go with 13 kills.
Charis Burge dished out 49 assists and tied Yuka Urano for the team lead with 12 digs apiece.
Syracuse out-hit FDU .295 to .154 as a team and won the ace battle, 9-7.
