Coach Scott Shafer Postgame Quotes
Georgia Tech 56, Syracuse 0
October 19, 2013 – Bobby Dodd Stadium
Opening Statement
“Let’s start off the right way here. I’m thinking about John Raymon. He had a tough injury. We are going to find out exactly what it is. We have our suspicions of what it is. It’s not a good thing, obviously. Let’s keep our thoughts and prayers for John and his family in a tough situation. Moving to the game and looking at it, we got out coached today. I got outcoached as a head coach. Coach Johnson is definitely 1-0 against Coach Shafer. I’m disappointed in myself. I really am. We went into it and we thought we had a really good plan but really we got our butts kicked today. That starts with me. I look forward to the next challenge. It’s going to be a while before I get to play against him but I can’t wait, personally.”
“We look forward to this next game against Wake Forest. We have two weeks to get ready for it. It’s going to be really key that we bounce back tomorrow. We are going to look at the issues that we had in our game today. We are not going to dwell on them too long and we are going to move forward as quickly as possible. We are going to try and find a handful of positives if we can, such as Brisly Estime. That was exciting for me to see him get out there and make some plays with the return game.”
“At the end of the day, poor job by me. I got outcoached today. I have to give our kids a chance. All I ask of the kids is that we need to solidify and clean up the penalties. Those are the things that we need to do a better job of controlling. We talk to the kids all the time about controlling the controllables. An effort mistake as a penalty is one thing, a great effort play and he hits the guy in the back is one thing. It’s the pre-snap and the obvious holds and that sort of the thing we need to clean up. We need to mature quickly as a team. We can’t let those things beat us, as well as the turnovers. All in all, we win as a team and we lose as a team. It starts right here. We need to do a better job. I look forward to seeing the whites of the kids eyes tomorrow and having a good Sunday as we start to prepare for a quality Wake Forest team.”
How shocking was the score, with both teams coming in 3-3?
“Not shocking at all. We look forward to playing the next game. It’s football. Sometimes you get your rumps kicked. We got our rumps kicked today. It’s a great job by your Georgia Tech team and I wish them all the luck in the future.”
What was it about the 3-4 that would have provided a little bit of an advantage?
“You go two ways with it. We felt like we couldn’t do both. Maybe that was a big mistake on my part. Maybe we needed to be a little bit more multiple. Our multiplicity was going to be lining up in the 3-4 and changing who the read and the speed of the read would be. They did a great job blocking us today. Football is still a game of blocking and tackling. Really when I look at it, they blocked us better we got off of blocks and put us in compromising positions to make one-on-one tackles. That’s what a good option team does and a good defense needs to do a better job defending it first and foremost with a scheme and answers. That’s where I look at myself and say poor job Coach Shafer.”
