2010 Season Review

ABOUT MCINTYRE’S DEBUT SEASON
The 2010 campaign marked the first year for Syracuse under head coach Ian McIntyre. The Orange finished the season at 2-10-5 and was 0-6-3 in BIG EAST play. Despite the team’s final record, there were numerous successes in McIntyre’s first year and the Orange remained in the hunt for a BIG EAST Tournament right up until its final regular-season game. Consider:
- Syracuse defeated a ranked opponent for the third time in the last four seasons when it knocked off #24 Colgate on Oct. 6, 3-2.
- Redshirt senior Jeremy Vuolo was selected as a finalist for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award (nation’s most outstanding senior student-athlete).
- The Orange played perennial BIG EAST power St. John’s to a scoreless draw on the road to end a three-game losing streak against the Red Storm.
- Syracuse averaged 839 fans for its seven home games, the fourth consecutive year the Orange has boasted an average home attendance of better than 800.
MCINTYRE GETS FIRST WIN
The Orange’s 1-0 victory over Northeastern on Sept. 10 at Elmore Field was the first for Ian McIntyre as the head coach at Syracuse. Overall, it was his 70th victory at Elmore, including his four years as a Hartwick player and 11 previous seasons as head coach at Oneonta State and Hartwick.
WORKING OVERTIME
Syracuse fans saw plenty of bonus soccer this season. The Orange tied the school record with nine overtime games in 17 outings in 2010. SU’s nine extra-session matches tied the team standard set in 1985 and equaled again in 1990. Seven of the team’s final 12 games were overtime matches and four of its seven home games went to extra time. Both of the team’s victories in 2010 came in overtime and Syracuse finished with a 2-2-5 overall mark in its nine overtime encounters.
VUOLO WRAPS UP COLLEGE CAREER
Syracuse redshirt senior Jeremy Vuolo put the finishing touches on his college career in 2010. Vuolo recorded 283 saves, a 1.07 goals-against average and 21 shutouts in his four seasons. He spent three years at Hartwick and was named the 2009 Mid-American Conference Goalkeeper of the Year before transferring to Syracuse for the 2010 campaign. Vuolo tallied three shutouts in BIG EAST play in his final season, including a six-save performance to blank perennial BIG EAST power St. John’s, 0-0, on Oct. 13.
Vuolo ranked fourth in the BIG EAST with a career-best 79 saves in his final season and was second in the league in saves per game (4.9). Vuolo led the BIG EAST Conference in saves during the regular season.
ROYDHOUSE PROVIDES SCORING PUNCH
Junior Nick Roydhouse was the most consistent offensive threat for the Orange in 2010. Roydhouse led the team in points (10), goals (4) and tied for the squad lead with two assists. His four goals in 16 games in 2010 were two more than he scored in 36 games coming into this season. His four scores accounted for 40 percent of the team’s goals and he had a hand in six of the Orange’s 10 goals on the year.
ORANGE DRAWS BIG CROWDS
Three of the team’s 2010 home games drew more than 1,000 fans. A crowd of 1,334 was on hand to witness Syracuse’s 0-0 draw against Pittsburgh on Sept. 25 in its BIG EAST opener. For the season opener against Siena, 1,231 fans were in attendance, and for the team’s match against Rutgers a crowd of 1,058 filled the stands. The Pittsburgh and Siena attendance totals rank in the top five in the history of the SU Soccer Stadium which opened in 1996. The Pittsburgh gathering was the third-largest crowd at the facility and the Siena attendance total was the fifth-highest.
For the season, Syracuse averaged 839 fans per game for its seven home dates. It was the furth straight year the Orange has posted an average home attendance of better than 800.
SILVER ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION
The Orange celebrated the 25th anniversary its 1985 BIG EAST Championship in a brief on-field ceremony prior to kickoff against Pittsburgh on Sept. 25. Thirteen members of the Orange were in attendance, including Mark DiMonte, Greg Kolodziey and team captain Jim Garrant.
Coached by Tim Hankinson, Syracuse went 12-6-4 overall that year and 2-1-1 in conference play. In the BIG EAST Tournament, Syracuse did not allow a goal, defeating Pittsburgh (2-0) in the semifinals before outlasting Connecticut (1-0) in the title game. The 1985 roster was filled with some of the greatest players in school history. Ken Vieira (31 points), DiMonte (18 points) and Kolodziey (12 points) were the team’s top three scorers. DiMonte and Kolodziey are two of the six players in Orange history to score at least 30 goals and Vieira finished his career with 28 goals, 14 of which came during the 1985 campaign.
