West Virginia Head Coach Quotes
Syracuse vs. West Virginia
October 21, 2011
Syracuse, N.Y.
Carrier Dome
On how the game went:
“We knew what we were getting ourselves into. They beat us today on all three sides of the ball. They outplayed us and outcoached us. It’s as simple as that.”
On the offense being inefficient:
“It’s been the same thing all year. We are not a very efficient football team. We make some big plays, but we’re not efficient. We knew what they were going to do. We knew they were going to play a bunch of people up and blitz half the time. We have to do a better job of recognizing that.”
On the wide receivers getting open on fade routes:
“Their corners got their hands on us way too much. We’ve been stressing that. When teams do this, we have to be able to get their hands off and run a fade route. Stedman (Bailey) and (Brad) Starks each did it one time. Other than that, we weren’t able to do that.”
On Syracuse gaining good yardage on first down:
“We discussed that at half time. When you win first down against a team like this, then you have a chance to get them off the field. We did not win third down either. They completely dominated us on all three sides. There won’t be any finger-pointing. This was a team loss. We have to give Syracuse credit for having more energy and being more excited to play. They just beat us on all three sides of the ball.”
On Syracuse getting a lot of pressure on Geno Smith:
“They blitz almost on every snap. Even when they didn’t blitz, their pass rush was better than our pass blocking. That’s what really exposed us. It was exposed by their defensive line and their linebackers. They were just beating us up. If you look at it on the other side, their offensive line mauled us. We were exposed up front. Our kickoff team didn’t do a good job getting down the field. Their kickoff team ran right through us. They made plays and played harder. We have played the same way since game one. There have been games when we’ve been more physical than our opponent. I give Syracuse credit.”
On Syracuse’s tight ends being wide open on their three touchdown receptions:
“We had guys in the vicinity. They were just a step ahead of us. You can put the blame on the coaching or our guys not playing hard. They beat us.”
