WOODRUFF NAMED TO ALL-BIG EAST SECOND TEAM FOR THIRD TIME
Orange forward Hansen Woodruff was selected to the All-BIG EAST Second Team for the third straight season in 2009. Woodruff led the Orange in points (15), goals (6) and tied for the team lead with three assists. He recorded a pair of two-goal games during the year, scoring twice in the team’s non-conference win against Cornell on Sept. 5 and in the Orange’s 3-1 victory versus Cincinnati on Oct. 31. Woodruff became the sixth player in school history to earn all-conference recognition three times joining Jeff Knittel, Paul Young, Guido Cristofori, John McCallion and Chris Aloisi as players who have achieved that feat.
HILL AND PEREVEGYENCEV EARN ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT HONORS
Syracuse defender Pete Hill and forward Tom Perevegyencev were named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District I Second Team in 2009. It marked the second straight season the Orange had at least one representative earn academic all-district honors. Kyle Hall was picked to the District I first team in 2008. Hill was a finance major, while Perevegyencev received his undergraduate degree in economics. Hill was named to the BIG EAST All-Academic Team all four seasons, and Perevegyencev was selected to the team twice.
ORANGE SETS SU SOCCER STADIUM AVERAGE ATTENDANCE RECORD
The Orange established a new SU Soccer Stadium home average attendance record in 2009. Syracuse averaged 908 fans per match for its nine home contests, eclipsing the record of 812 set in 2008. The Orange topped the 1,000 mark four times, including three of the top five crowds in the history of the facility (1,418 for Cornell on Sept. 5; 1,311 for Seton Hall on Sept. 18 and 1,128 for Georgetown on Sept. 20). Syracuse’s average home attendance has increased every season dating back to 2004.
WOODRUFF CAPS STELLAR CAREER WITH TWO GOALS AGAINST CINCINNATI
Hansen Woodruff will go down as one of the best offensive players in school history. The Stuart, Fla. native scored twice in SU’s 3-1 win against Cincinnati. They were the 26th and 27th goals of his career and increased his career points total to 66. His 27 career goals ranks ninth on SU’s all-time list, and his 66 points is tied with Ken Vieira for ninth on that respective career ledger. Woodruff paced the Orange with 15 points and six goals in 2009. He also tied for the squad lead with three assists.
BRODE SOLID IN ROOKIE SEASON
Midfielder Mark Brode was one of two Orange players to start every game in 2009. Brode finished the year with six points (2g, 2a), which led all SU freshmen and ranked third on the team. The only other SU player to start every match in 2009 was senior Kenny Caceros. Brode is the first SU freshman to start every match of a season since Spencer Schomaker and Robert Cavicchia in 2005.
JONES FOURTH IN THE LEAGUE IN SAVES
Goalie Ryan Jones ranked fourth in the BIG EAST in saves in 2009. He was fifth in the conference in saves per game. Jones registered 74 stops in 17 games, good for an average of 4.35 saves per contest. He stopped a season-best 12 shots in his first start at Colgate on Sept. 7.
JONES MAKES 12 SAVES IN FIRST START
Goalie Ryan Jones made his second appearance and first career start on Sept. 7 at Colgate. The Clifton Park, N.Y. native stopped 12 shots in the match, including seven in the second half and overtime. His 12 saves were the most by an individual SU keeper since Oct. 14, 2003 when Alim Karim finished with 12 saves in a 1-1 draw versus Rutgers, and it was the highest save total by a BIG EAST goalkeeper in 2009.
