Postgame Quotes
Syracuse vs. Providence
Saturday, April 24, 2010
Carrier Dome/Syracuse, N.Y.
Head Coach John Desko
Opening statement:
“I am somewhat happy with the final score. I thought we came alive in the second half. I did not think that we brought our best game in the first half today. We talked all week about taking care of business with Providence and fortunately we did a better job in the second half offensively. They tried to slow it down. I thought their goalie played pretty well and I think we played pretty good defense again for the most part today.”
On the improvement in the second half:
“I guess that is why I am not terribly disappointed with the score. I was a little disappointed with our play in the first half, but they did what they had to do. They had to slow it down and they had to play good team defense. They had to hold onto the ball like they did with their double inverts. You can’t blame them for that. I’m sure that they didn’t want to get into a running game in the Carrier Dome. Fortunately, we played better in the second half, at least offensively."
On the benefit of already going through the toughest part of the schedule:
“You have to play them sooner or later and I think we have a great opponent coming up in Notre Dame. It is a team that was undefeated in the regular season last year. They have beaten teams like Duke and Loyola this year. We are going out to their place and we are going to help christen their field. We have to be prepared. I am not sure it's going to be easy going down the stretch.”
On the importance of giving the seniors playing time today:
“It was important. That was one of the things that we used as an incentive. We wanted to try to get off to a good start so that we could get the seniors in today. We would have liked to have gotten them in a little earlier, but unfortunately the score in the first half did not allow us to do that."
On Providence’s shooting:
“I think they had some opportunities. They went down there a couple of times on fast breaks. We knew that Ryan Riedl is terrific on the field as a defender and he can score and we let that one get by us. Here we are, we give up five goals on the day and we are sounding disappointed with it. I think the defense held its own once again.”
On the continued emergence of Chris Daniello:
“I think he has been there for us all year. He has been our go-to guy. He is playing in the midfield and at attack. Today he was at both positions, last game it was mostly from the midfield. He has just been our go-to guy and a real threat for us this year.”
On the play of the seniors on Senior Day:
"I think that their hard work is starting to pay off and they are getting on the field for us now. Guys like Chris Daniello, they are leading our group offensively. I think that the defense has played very well all year long. It was great that the seniors got to get in some game situations. To have their parents walk on the field with them early on was an emotional time for them. It is just a great memory that they are going to have after the last four years.”
On the play of Cody Jamieson:
“It was good to see Cody play well out there. He would probably be the first one to tell you that he could have had a couple more goals. It was great that he is scoring at the right time of the year."
Max Bartig, Senior, Midfield
On the team getting the first goal to start the third quarter:
“It was pretty big. We didn’t get off to the start we wanted to in the first half. We had a lot of turnovers and the goalie made some nice saves. We talked in the locker room and decided we needed to have a big third quarter. It was nice.”
On what he wants the legacy of this year’s senior class to be at the end of the season:
“We’re just trying to make a name for ourselves. This year we are doing a good job of that. We have a good thing going right now. We have a lot of wins under our belts. Guys that played last year got experience playing in the Final Four and the national championship game and that’s where we are looking to go again.”
On scoring twice on Senior Day:
“It was huge. I’ve been scoring goals the last couple of games, but with family here, it was big. I just want to make my team proud. The last three years haven’t gone as I have expected or I would’ve liked, but this year it’s changing up and I’m having a pretty good year and so is our senior class. To go out and stick two goals on Senior Day was good for me.”
Cody Jamieson, Senior, Attack
On Providence’s deliberate offense:
“We knew it was coming. We expected it all week long. We knew we had to finish the ball and make the referees start calling the stall.”
On the team’s slow start in the first half:
“We were getting our shots. They weren’t falling. We were missing the net and the goalie made some good saves. We just had to settle down, loosen our grip on our sticks and put the ball in the net.”
