Syracuse University Game Notes
Syracuse vs. Virginia Tech
November 9, 2002
Syracuse, N.Y. - Carrier Dome
Walter Reyes' third carry of the game moved him into second place on the SU sophomore rushing list, passing Floyd Little (828, 1964). Reyes finished the game with 118 yards, his third straight 100-yard effort. He now has 930 on the season, 442 yards behind Joe Morris' sophomore-record setting total of 1,372 set in 1979.
Reyes' six-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter was his 15th rushing touchdown of the season, breaking the Syracuse single-season rushing touchdown record. Reyes surpassed James Mungro (2001) and Floyd Little (1965) who each rushed for 14 touchdowns.
Reyes' 25-yard reception on a screen pass in the third quarter was the longest of his career. His previous best was eight yards versus Pittsburgh. Reyes caught another screen pass in the quarter, setting career highs for both receptions (2) and yards (40).
Troy Nunes went 26-of-40 for 403 yards, all career-highs. His yardage total is the second-highest in Orangemen history and only the second 400-yard game in SU history. Marvin Graves threw for 425 yards versus Rutgers in 1992. Nunes' 40 attempts ranks third on the SU single-game ledger, while his 26 completions ranks second on the Orangemen single-game list (Marvin Graves, 29 vs. Cincinnati, 1993).
David Tyree set career highs with nine catches for 229 yards. His yardage total is the second-highest in SU history (Scott Schwedes, 249 vs. Boston College, 1985), and just the third 200-yard receiving game in Orangemen history (Marvin Harrison, 213 vs. West Virginia, 1995).
Jamel Riddle's first punt return of 19 yards moved him into fifth place on the Syracuse all-time punt return yardage list, passing Ed Koban (645). Riddle had three punt returns for 23 yards in the game and now has 659 yards for his career.
B.J. Darnell's forced fumble on a Virginia Tech punt return was the first of his career. Lenny Cusumano recovered the fumble, the first fumble recovery of his career.
Collin Barber's 38-yard field goal in the third quarter was his third of the game and 14th of his career. He moved into sole possession of 10th place on the SU career field goals list, passing Bernie Ruoff (1972-74). Barber's three field goals in one game is tied for 10th on the Syracuse single-game list. It was the 25th time in SU history a player kicked three field goals in one game. Nate Trout was the last versus Boston College in 1999.
Rich Scanlon's second-quarter interception was the first of his career.
Latroy Oliver's second-quarter sack was his first of the season. It was the first solo sack of his career and his first quarterback takedown since recording half a sack versus Rutgers in 2000.
Thump Belton's 16-yard run in the second quarter was his longest of the season.
Syracuse has now blocked four kicks in its last five games. The Orangemen blocked a punt versus Rutgers, rejected two field goals at UCF and a punt versus the Hokies. David Tyree's blocked punt was his third in as many games versus Virginia Tech.
Joe Donnelly's touchdown catch in the second overtime was the first touchdown reception of his career.
Today's game marked the first time since the overtime rule was implemented in 1996 that the Orangemen have played two overtime games in the same season. SU is now 2-3 all-time in overtime. It is the Orangemen's first overtime victory since defeating Pittsburgh in double overtime at the Carrier Dome in 2000. SU is now 2-1 in overtime at the Carrier Dome.
