A potential game-tying header from Syracuse junior Gabby Wisbeck in the final minutes was turned away and Clemson answered at the other end to earn a 2-0 victory at Historic Riggs Field on Thursday night. The Tigers improved to 5-2-2 overall and 1-1-0 in the ACC while the Orange fell to 3-4-2, 0-2-0.
HOW THE MATCH WAS DECIDED
After Clemson built a one-sided possession and shot advantage for most of the contest, the match was settled in a last-minute flurry of activity at both ends. With the Tigers ahead, 1-0, the Orange mounted its best threat. Senior defender Chloe Joseph attacked the right side, carrying the ball into the final third. She crossed and Wisbeck drove a header toward the Clemson goal. Tiger keeper Nona Reason managed to stop the blast, with 2:44 remaining. Clemson retaliated 31 seconds later and settled things with a right-footed goal from Anna Castenfelt that was set up by Ella Bach.
ORANGE DEFENSE WITHSTANDS TIGER ATTACK
Syracuse held off Clemson in the first half, thanks to solid defensive play and the goalkeeping of junior Maya Naimoli. The Tigers unleashed 12 shots and created five corners in the first 45 minutes, but Naimoli responded with three saves and the Orange kept the hosts off the scoreboard. The two teams entered the intermission in a 0-0 deadlock.
The play evened out following the break. Clemson's Natalie Brooks tested Naimoli 4:43 into the second half but the Orange keeper was equal to the task. Syracuse sophomore forward Ali Howard threatened, but her strike ended up wide. The stalemate ended when the Tigers' Alessandra Washington fed Taylor Lieb for the game's initial score at 66:42. It was Lieb's third goal of the campaign.
The Syracuse offense picked up steam over the final 20 minutes of play. Senior Julia Dening had an attempt blocked and senior defender Chloe Joseph put a shot on net that was stopped by Reason. Following a Syracuse corner kick, freshman Emery Streets headed the ball just above the Clemson crossbar with 13:15 remaining. The Tigers added the final tally on Castenfelt's fourth goal of the season.
