A late goal by senior midfielder Moo Galbus was not enough and Syracuse (3-1-1) fell from the ranks of the unbeaten in a 2-1 loss to visiting Niagara (2-1-0).

HOW THE MATCH WAS DECIDED

Niagara scored what proved to be the game winner with 9:52 left in the contest. Sarah Lucas fed Naiya Johnston in the middle of a crowded box. Johnston slipped the ball to Lucy Trinder, who then scored her first of the season. The tally put the visitors ahead, 2-0.

METRO CONFERENCE PLAYER OF THE WEEK STRIKES EARLY

Niagara opened the scoring just 1:30 into the contest. Caitlyn Gratton, who earned Metro Conference Player of the Week on Monday, jumped on a Syracuse miscue and quickly found the net. It was Gratton's third goal of the campaign.

SYRACUSE PRESSES PLAY AFTER THE BREAK

The Orange mounted a more consistent attack following the intermission, and attempted eight shots over the final 45 minutes. Many of Syracuse's best looks ended up over the Niagara goal. Fifth-year player Vickie Jones, sophomore Abby Incorvaia, and junior Anna Croyle each had strikes travel high. Freshman Lauren Christy tested the Purple Eagle goal 77:35 into the match, but saw her shot turned away by Niagara goalkeeper Julia Poissant.

GALBUS GIVES ORANGE LATE HOPE

Syracuse continued to pressure the Niagara defense and the hard work paid off late in the match. Sophomore Ali Howard crossed a pass to Galbus, who finished with 1:36 left in the contest. It was the first collegiate goal for Galbus.

NOTABLE NUMBERS

Thursday's result marked the second straight year the Purple Eagles earned a 2-1 victory at Syracuse.
Syracuse outshot Niagara, 12-7.
The Orange owned a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Junior goalkeeper Maggie Manning made her first regular-season appearance for Syracuse. She finished with two saves.
In addition to Manning, the Orange received 90-minute efforts from fifth-year player Vickie Jones, senior Chloe Joseph, juniors Kendall Mesh, Jasmine Nixon and Gabby Wisbeck, and sophomores Bree Bridges and Abby Incorvaia.

NEXT GAME

Syracuse hosts Harvard on Sunday, Aug. 30, at 1:00 p.m. It is Senior Day at the SU Soccer Stadium. The Orange will honor seven senior players and two managers.
