Fifth-year midfielder Vickie Jones scored her third goal of the season and junior Maya Naimoli posted her third shutout of the campaign in Syracuse's 3-0 victory against Princeton (1-1-0) on Aug. 23 at the SU Soccer Stadium.
Sophomore midfielder Abby Incorvaia and senior Farrah Stephens-Martin scored 21 seconds apart in the second half to secure the Syracuse (3-0-1) victory.
HOW THE MATCH WAS DECIDED
At 26:32 of the first half, Princeton was called for a foul in the box. Jones converted the penalty kick, her second of the year, and ultimately provided the Orange with all the scoring they would need. The tally for Jones, who transferred to Syracuse from Michigan in the offseason, was her squad-best third this fall.
MORE ORANGE OFFENSE
Syracuse added to its advantage following the intermission. Incorvaia scored for the second straight match, at the 58:45 mark. Sophomore Ali Howard crossed the ball in front of the net and Incorvaia headed it past Princeton goalkeeper Sydney Romano. Seconds later, Incorvaia lofted a pass over the defense to Stephens-Martin, who reached out and directed the ball into the lower corner of the net.
A SOLID DEFENSIVE EFFORT
Naimoli was strong in net for Syracuse. She finished with five saves on the afternoon. In her four starts this season, she has yielded only one goal, on a penalty kick.
The Orange back line of senior Chloe Joseph, junior Jasmine Nixon, sophomore Bree Bridges and junior Kendall Mesh helped limit the Tigers to five shots on goal.
