#9 Syracuse Races for The Goes Trophy Saturday Morning
4/18/2025 2:18:00 PM | Men's Rowing
The Syracuse Men's Rowing Team continues its 2025 spring season this Saturday, April 19, traveling to Annapolis, Maryland, as competitors in the annual Goes Trophy race. The #9 Orange will square off with longtime rivals #20Â Navy and #15 Cornell on the Severn River in a three-team event full of tradition and competition.
Racing begins at 7:40 a.m. as the teams will launch from the U.S. Naval Academy Boathouse and stars will be every 20 minutes. Syracuse is racing four boats this weekend, The Varsity Eight looks to earn a victory in the program's longest running cup race while SU seeks to bring home The Stagg Trophy for the sixth consecutive time.Â
The Varsity 8 will compete for the Goes Trophy, while the Second and Third Varsity Eights will race for the Stagg Cup. The Orange are coming off a challenging weekend in Redwood Shores where Syracuse's top two boats raced crews from California Rowing Club, Cal's Freshman Eight, Brown, and Stanford. Despite strong starts, the Orange finished with losses in all races, including close finishes against Brown's 2V8 and Stanford's crews.
Syracuse enters this year's event with history on the line, having won the last four Goes Trophy races, a program-best streak. The Orange Varsity 8, led by coxswain Joseph Biondolillo and stroked by senior Declan Fry, will aim to extend that run. Head Coach Dave Reischman has led Syracuse to eight of its 15 Goes Trophy wins.
Spectators are encouraged to watch from the designated shoreline locations near the finish line in Annapolis
About the Goes Trophy
The Goes Trophy was created in 1955 by Clifford 'Tip' Goes, a Syracuse graduate from the class of 1914, to honor three legendary coaches – James Ten Eyck (Syracuse), Charles Courtney (Cornell), and Richard Glendon (Navy). The award is given to the winner of the varsity eight race between the schools.Â
About the Stagg Trophy
Presented to the team compiling the most overall points in the heavyweight races between Navy, Cornell and Syracuse, the Stagg Trophy is named after Norman G. Stagg, the late Tompkins County judge and former Cornell oarsman.

About Syracuse 150:
Syracuse University is celebrating 150 years of rowing during the 2024-25 season. In the fall of 1874, the SU Rowing Club was founded, but it wasn't until the 1899-1900 school year that a varsity crew existed with the Syracuse University Navy, coached by Cornell alum E.R. Sweetland. On June 15, 1900, Syracuse competed in its first intercollegiate race on Onondaga Lake against Cornell, birthing a rivalry that still exists today.
Syracuse has won six IRA National Championships (Varsity 8) while claiming the Stewards Cup (Freshman Eight) 12 times, the Kennedy Challenge Cup (JV Eight) six times and the Eric Will Trophy (Varsity Four with Coxswain) once in its illustrious career. Syracuse is one of three programs to have reached the Grand Final of the IRA Regatta in each of the last four seasons, placing 4th (2021), 5th (2022 and 2023) and 6th in 2024. Â
