The Syracuse Men's Rowing season gets underway this weekend in Redwood Shores, Calif. The #9 Orange will race California Rowing Club, #3 Brown and #8 Stanford in the first races of the season. Racing begins Saturday, April 12 at 10:20 a.m. (1:20 p.m. ET). All races will be streamed live via Overnght and live results will be available on HereNow.Â
The Orange Varsity 8, coxed by freshman Lucas Tan and stroked by Declan Fry begins the season ranked No. 9 in the IRCA/IRA Coaches Week 1 Poll, having dropped two spots from the preseason poll after not yet racing this season. Brown's Varsity 8 is ranked #3 with three weekends of racing under the Bears' belt while #8 Stanford has earned wins over #21 Drexel, #22 Oregon State, (RV) Santa Clara, #23 San Diego and #15 Wisconsin with just a three second loss to preseason favorite Washington.Â
The Varsity 8 gets the weekend started at 10:20 a.m. (1:20 p.m. ET) when the Orange line up with California Rowing Club (CRC), an elite-level training club for athletes looking to make the jump from collegiate rowing to international competition. CRC's eight will be coxed by Syracuse Rowing alum Bricen Nygaard '23. The 2V8, coxed by senior Katherine Kelly and stroked by Anders Erlandsen, will line up with the University of California (Cal) Freshmen 8 at 10:50 a.m. (1:50 p.m. ET).Â
In the afternoon session, the Varsity 8 will race Brown, who has climbed to #3 in the Week 1 Poll (Preseason #9) after a strong start to the season. The Bears have wins over #7 Yale, #4 Harvard, #11 Northeastern and #12 Boston University this season with their only loss at the hands of Washington by just over a second in Sarasota on March 29. The Varsity 8 race is scheduled for 2 p.m. (5 p.m. ET) while the 2V8 will race at 2:30 p.m. (5:30 p.m.).
Syracuse wraps up racing on Sunday against host Stanford. The Varsity 8 race is scheduled for 9:16 a.m. (12:16 p.m. ET) while the 2V8 race vs. the Cardinal is set for 9:24 a.m. (12:24 p.m. ET).
Redwood Shores is an excellent course for spectating and allows multiple viewing points of the 2,000-meter race. Fans are encouraged to watch from the bridge just past the 1,000 meter mark (located here) or at the finish line just outside the Grand Bay Hotel located at 223 Twin Dolphin Dr., Redwood City, Calif. While there is no designated parking for spectators, there is parking under the bridge (Bridge Parkway) and in the neighborhood near the finish line.
