
Orange Down Mercyhurst on School Day

SYRACUSE, N.Y.- The Orange women's basketball team (11-1, 1-0) defeated Mercyhurst (0-11) 106-40 in its last non-conference game of the season. Uche Izoje and Kiera Scott both recorded double-doubles to help roll the team past the Lakers as the Orange head into conference play. Â

HOW IT HAPPENEDÂ
Off the opening drive, Sophie Burrows knocked in a wide-open three-pointer to get the Orange started. Izoje led the team, scoring double-digits in the first quarter. At the buzzer, Angelica Velez was caught up by Mercyhurst defenders, but found an escape to hit a bucket at half court, giving the Orange a 32-12 advantage.Â
The bench stepped up in the second quarter, accounting for 17 points, with Maddy Potts scoring eight of those points. Potts put up two from beyond the arc and a field goal, while also blocking a shot attempt by the Lakers. Syracuse entered the locker room with a 34-point lead, the largest lead this season, with a 58-24 score.Â
Syracuse went on a 12-0 run in the third quarter, outscoring the Lakers 27-8. To end the third quarter, Potts was able to beat the buzzer with a three-pointer, as SU leads 85-32 entering the final 10 minutes of play.Â
Oyindamola Akinbolawa recorded six points in the fourth quarter, as Scott, Izoje and Burrows followed with four points of their own. SU collected six steals and blocked four shots to roll past Mercyhurst 106-40.Â

- Uche Izoje recorded a double-double (23 points, 11 rebounds), her second consecutive, making her the first to do so since Kyra Wood in the 2024-25 season (Jan. 26 vs. Clemson and Feb. 2 vs. Virginia)Â
- Kiera Scott recorded her first career double-double, scoring 10 points and collecting 10 rebounds.Â
- Izoje and Scott became the first duo to record a double-double in the same game since Izabel Varejao and Kyra Wood did so against Clemson on Jan 26. 2025.Â
- The Orange dished out 28 assists, the most since facing Pittsburgh on Feb. 27, 2025. Freshman Camdyn Nelson led the team with five assists of her own.Â
- SU's 106 points is the first time the team has scored 100+ since facing Niagara on Nov. 5, 2024.Â
- The Orange's 32-point first quarter ties their season high of points in a quarter (last vs. Canisius, Nov. 11)Â Â
- Syracuse's 34-point lead at halftime is the most this season and the eighth game this season holding a double-digit lead over its opponent.Â
- The Orange successfully made 46 field goals through 78 attempts.Â
- SU has held an opponent under 50 points six times this season.Â
- Five players scored in double digits: Izoje (23), Burrows (12), Potts (11), Scott (10), Hawkins (10).Â
- There were 10,226 fans in attendance for School Day, the second largest crowd in program history.Â
