UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Behind goals in the first and fourth quarter, the 10th-ranked Syracuse University field hockey team completed the Central Pennsylvania double on Sunday, edging out No. 16 Penn State 2-1 at the Nittany Lions' Field Hockey Complex.
Willemijn Boogert got the scoring started in the first quarter for Syracuse (2-0) before Bo van Kempen added a much-needed insurance goal in the fourth quarter on a penalty corner chance. Penn State (0-2) pulled back within one just three minutes after the van Kempen goal, but three saves from starting Syracuse goalkeeper Louise Pert in the opening stanza helped the Orange to their second win of the weekend in the Keystone State.
Sophia Gladieux, back from Paris on the US Olympic Team, scored the lone goal for the Nittany Lions, while her netminder Aby Deverka made three saves, stopping one each in the first, second, and fourth periods.

How it Happened
- Penn State had the momentum in the early going, getting a corner just 41 seconds in while taking three rapid fire shots in the next 17 seconds. Pert stopped two of those chances while the third went wide of the mark.
- Five minutes later, Boogert read a transition pass perfectly, stealing the ball and driving through the heart of the Penn State defense, ripping a shot from just inside the top of the circle for a 1-0 lead six minutes in.
- Each side got one more shot off in the first quarter, but neither opportunity found the net as the Orange held a 1-0 lead after 15 minutes.
- Pert and the Orange defense fended off a second Penn State corner chance five minutes into the second frame. It would be another eight minutes before either team got a shot off, coming from the stick of Syracuse's Lieke Leeggangers but the chance went wide. Vivian Rowan got off another shot in the waning moments of the second but was thwarted by Deverka as the Orange took a 1-0 lead into the break.
- Penn State's Sophia Mannino drew a yellow card in the 35th minute, but Syracuse could not get an offensive chance going with the extra attacker. Both sides concluded the third quarter without a shot.
- Coming into the deciding quarter, Penn State got another corner four minutes in as Gladieux took a rip but was turned aside by second half 'Cuse keeper Vera Hekkenberg, preserving the 1-0 lead.
- In the 52nd minute, Syracuse's venerable corner unit got a chance as Boogert zipped the ball in to stick stopper Annabelle Vossenaar, teeing up a chance for van Kempen. The latter made good on the chance and scored what held up as the game-winning goal.
- Penn State applied the pressure late in the contest as Gladieux scored the first goal against Syracuse this season.
- Hattie Madden got one last shot in for the Orange but was turned aside by Deverka in the 59th minute.
- Shots were nearly even through the 60 minutes as Penn State took eight while Syracuse managed seven. Both teams took two attempts in the fourth quarter, each side scoring on one of those opportunities.
- Syracuse netminders combined for four saves, including three in the first quarter from Pert and one from Hekkenberg in the fourth. Deverka made three saves against the Orange.
- The Orange were granted two penalty corners, converting one of those chances for the win. Penn State had four attacking penalty corners, but could not find the net on any.
- Syracuse collected its sixth-straight win over the Nittany Lions, including the second in as many years by a 2-1 count in Happy Valley. The Orange have won their last four games at Penn State, dating back to an overtime win back in the 2013 NCAA Tournament.
- The Orange are idle on Friday before taking on another B1G opponent, No. 14 Ohio State on Sunday.
- Hosting for the first time in 2024, the Orange and Buckeyes will clash on ACC Network with Leah Secondo and Suzanne Bush on the call. Game time is set for noon at J.S. Coyne Stadium.
- Syracuse and Ohio State meet for the first time since the 2014 season and Sunday's tilt will be the first showdown at Coyne since 2013. The Orange have won the last three games against Ohio State, including an overtime win the last time out.
