Four Syracuse University boats had their entry accepted to the Intercollegiate Rowing Coaches (IRA) National Championship, which is set to begin May 31 at Lake Mercer at Mercer County Park in West Windsor, N.J. Heats begin on Friday morning with the Varsity Eight in Heat 1 at 8:10 a.m. and continue Saturday with semifinals and the finals on Sunday morning, June 2.
Fans can enjoy a free live broadcast of the entire IRA Regatta via Overnght Media and live results will be available online.
In a new format this year, there will be no repechages. Therefore, the top three crews from each heat with advance to the AB Semifinal while the remaining crews will race in the CD Semifinal.
The Varsity Eight, coxed by Michael Harris, will begin racing for the Orange on Friday morning at 8:10 a.m. The Orange (Lane 4) line up with Georgetown, Dartmouth, Washington, Drexel, and Jacksonville. It will be the first time SU lines up with Washington this season, as well as Drexel and Jacksonville. Syracuse, Georgetown, and Dartmouth all raced at the Lake Morey Invite in late April and saw each other again at Eastern Sprints on May 19.
The Second Varsity Eight (2V8) heat is set for 9:30 a.m. The Orange are in Lane 4 and will head down the 2,000-meter course with Drexel, Boston University, California, Stanford, and Santa Clara. The Orange raced both Cal and Stanford to begin the season in Redwood Shores. SU lost to the defending national champion Bears but beat Stanford by open water. Syracuse has seen Boston University twice this season, losing narrowly in their duel at the Lake Morey Invitational before beating BU in their heat to advance to the grand final of Eastern Sprints.
The Third Varsity Eight (3V8) races at 9:50 a.m. and will be in Lane 2 against Oregon State, Washington, Boston University, and Georgetown. The Orange have raced both BU and Georgetown already during the regular season at the Lake Morey Invitational, besting both teams during the weekend.
The Orange qualified a coxed four, which is comprised of four rowers from the Orange's fourth varsity eight and coxswain Katherine Kelly. Time trials for the foxed four is set up as a head race down the course beginning at 11:40 a.m. The top 18 fastest times advance to the semifinals and the Orange are set to start 12th.
