A Pair of Orange Alums Set for 2024 IIHF World Championship

A pair of former Orange captains are participating in the 2024 IIHF World Championship. Former Orange standout and two-time Olympian Akane Hosoyamada '15 will play for Team Japan and 2016 College Hockey America Player of the Year Melissa Piacentini '16 will be serve as video coach for USA Hockey. The tournament, which will be played at the Adirondack Bank Center in Utica, N.Y., begins April 3 and concludes on April 14.

Hosoyamada, who was a captain for the 2014-15 Orange, played in the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympic Games and the 2022 Bejing games. An alternate captain and defenseman for Team Japan, Hosoyamada wears #4, just as she did for the Orange. A 2015 Syracuse University graduate Hosoyamada was born in Banff, Alberta, Canada and is the daughter of natives of Japan. At Syracuse, Hosoyamada tallied 61 points, including 10 goals and 51 assists. She earned 2013 All-College Hockey America First team honors and was the 2013 CHA Best Defenseman, and 2015 All-CHA Second Team recognition.

Piacentini, who has worked at Northeastern since 2018 as director of hockey operations and currently as an assistant coach, holds the Syracuse record for career goals with 53 and ranks second on Syracuse's career scoring list with 112 points. She holds the second and third spots on the Orange single-season goals record list having tallied 18 goals in 2014-15 and 17 in 2013-14.
