SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse beat Le Moyne, 8-6 and 6-1, Wednesday afternoon at Skytop Stadium.
Â
The Orange clubbed three solo home runs in game one and used a five-run sixth to help secure the win. In the second game, Syracuse scored all six runs in the second inning.
Â
Junior Britney Lewinski and graduate student Jessie DiPasquale both struck out a season-best eight batters in their respective starts. Lewinski tossed a season-high six innings in the circle while DiPasquale went the distance in game two, throwing her second complete game with Syracuse.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME ONE:Â
Holding a 1-0 lead through four innings, Syracuse added to its advantage in the fifth with the long ball. Senior Olivia Pess sent the first pitch she saw over the right-center wall to double the Orange's lead. Two batters later, graduate student Rebecca Clyde slugged the first pitch above the left field fencing to put Syracuse up, 3-0.
Â
After surrendering a two-run single off the bat of Sydney Nesci in the top of the sixth, the Orange responded with a five-spot. Senior Angel Jasso continued the Syracuse power surge, leading off the frame with a solo shot. Later in the inning, the Orange scored runs in three straight at bats, with back-to-back singles from freshman Makenzie Foster and Pess and a sacrifice fly by junior Kelly Breen. Clyde capped off the frame with an RBI single to right to make it an 8-2 advantage.
Â
Le Moyne did not go away, eventually loading the bases in the top of the seventh. The Dolphins plated three runs on a Syracuse defensive miscue, cutting the advantage to 8-5. With two outs and runners on the corners, Nesci doubled to right to score Brooke Nicolaos before Elaina Kassap was thrown out at home to end the game after attempting to score from first.
Â
Lewinski tallied her third win of the campaign, striking out a best eight batters in six innings of work while allowing two runs to score. Sophomore Julianna Verni tossed the seventh inning, fanning a Dolphin in the frame.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME TWO:Â
Syracuse jumped on Le Moyne early in the second game, sending 11 batters to the plate in the team's six-run second inning. Leading 1-0, Jasso knocked in a pair with a single to the left-center gap, extending the lead to 3-0. Two batters later, sophomore Madison Knight drove in a pair of her own before Clyde's sacrifice fly capped off the six-run frame.
Â
That was all the offense DiPasquale would need, as the fifth-year hurler fanned eight batters across the seven innings. The righty allowed Le Moyne's lone run to score in the fifth on a bases loaded walk before escaping any further damage with a pop out and groundout to end the threat.
