SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse University volleyball team (12-4, 0-4 ACC) came up short Sunday against No. 1 Pittsburgh (14-0, 4-0 ACC) at the Women's Building.
Pittsburgh won in three sets to continue its undefeated start. The Panthers were the unanimous No. 1 team in this week's American Volleyball Coaches Association Top 25 poll and had dropped just one set this season entering Sunday.
Sunday was Syracuse's annual Dig Pink match to recognize the fight against cancer. The Orange wore pink warm-up shirts and ribbons in support of the fight.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Syracuse stayed within striking distance early in the first, as five Ava Palm kills had the Orange down just 9-6. However, Pittsburgh won the next four points to go ahead by seven and lost just five more points in the set, which they won 25-11.
Pittsburgh won five of the first six points in the second but kills by Zharia Harris-Waddy and Palm brought 'Cuse back within two at 5-3. The Panthers built as large as a seven-point advantage before Syracuse launched a late charge to get back in the set. A pair of Sydnie Waller kills bookended a 4-0 'Cuse run that cut the Pittsburgh lead to 18-15, but the Panthers responded with a 6-1 run of their own to get to set point. Syracuse saved two set points, one via a Palm kill, but Pittsburgh closed out a 25-18 victory with a kill on the next point.
The Orange traded points early with Pittsburgh thanks to a balanced attack, with kills by Anastasiia Nikolnikova, Harris-Waddy, Palm and Waller keeping 'Cuse within one at 6-5. However, a 5-0 scoring burst shortly after by the Panthers moved them ahead 13-6. Syracuse found its footing late with a 3-0 run that included two Palm aces, but Pittsburgh went on to close out the match with a 25-14 triumph.
NOTES AND HIGHLIGHTS
Syracuse heads west next weekend for a pair of ACC road matches. The Orange will take on No. 5 Stanford on Oct. 11 and California on Oct. 12. Both contests will start at 10 p.m. and will be streamed live on ACCNX.
