It was the fewest points allowed by the Orange against the Cardinals since the 1992 season as the Orange defense held Louisville to just 282 total yards, just one season after the Cardinals averaged 446.2 yards per game.
Syracuse (1-0, 1-0 ACC) was paced by a strong showing from Garrett Shrader, who completed 18 of his 25 passes for 236 yards, alongside two passing and one rushing touchdown. His 18 completions was a career best and his 236 yards were his best in an Orange jersey. Shrader ran for another 94 yards for 309 yards of total offense. Sean Tucker led Syracuse with 100 total rushing yards and 84 receiving yards, adding two touchdowns for the Orange.

The Orange defense was backed by interceptions from Garrett Williams and Derek McDonald, who returned his pick for 30 yards to set up Syracuse's fourth-quarter touchdown. Marlowe Wax finished with 10 total tackles, including 3.0 tackles for loss. Williams added nine total tackles as well.
Syracuse jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the first 10 minutes of the game after a 31-yard field goal from Andre Szmyt. The Orange defense held firm after just five plays from Louisville, setting up a 55-yard receiving touchdown as Shrader and Tucker connected, capping a five-play, 87 yard drive for Syracuse.
Louisville got its only scoring play of the game with 1:10 left in the first quarter on a 36-yard run from Evans. Syracuse responded five minutes into the second quarter on Tucker's second touchdown of the day, a four-yard blast up the middle, the 20th touchdown of his career which moved him into 16th all-time for total touchdowns at Syracuse. The Orange took a 17-7 lead into halftime.

Neither team scored in the third quarter before the Orange broke the drought with 13:02 left in the game. Sitting on goal-to-go, Shrader hit Oronde Gadsden II for his first career touchdown to finish a four-play, 13-yard drive in just over two minutes.
The Orange extended the lead with an insurance touchdown midway through the fourth quarter as Shrader accounted for his third touchdown of the night, rolling left and rushing for six yards for the final points of the night for a 31-7 Syracuse win.
It was the third time in series history the Orange held Louisville to single digit points, pairing Saturday's win with a 48-0 victory in 1985 and a 15-9 Orange win in 1992. Saturday's win snapped a three-game slide for the Orange against the Cardinals.
The win comes as the eighth season-opening win for the Orange in the last nine seasons while improving head coach Dino Babers to 5-2 in season openers at Syracuse.
