Volleyball Welcomes Notre Dame and #2 Louisville

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Syracuse volleyball is set for a two-match home stand this weekend, as the squad is set to face Notre Dame and #2 Louisville. The Orange will square off against the Fighting Irish on Friday, Oct. 7th at 7 p.m. and the #2 ranked Cardinals on Sunday, Oct. 9th at 1 p.m. Both matchups will stream live on ACC Network Extra.Â

Notre Dame leads the all-time series over Syracuse 28-8. The last meeting between the two squads was on Oct. 8th, 2021, when the Fighting Irish collected a three-set sweep. SU's most recent victory over ND occurred on Nov. 1st, 2019, when the Orange took a 3-1 victory.Â

Louisville holds a 26-4 series edge over the Orange. The last meeting between the squads resulted in a 3-0 victory for the Cards on Oct. 10th, 2021. 2019 was the last time 'Cuse locked in a victory over the Cardinals, which occurred in five sets (Nov. 3rd, 2019).

The last time the squad was 4-0 in ACC play was during the 2018 season, which was also the first time in program history that the squad made it into the NCAA Tournament. The squad took down Yale (3-0) before falling to #7 Penn State (0-3) in tournament action. Â

Sunday's matchup against the #2 Cardinals will be the first time this season that the Orange have faced a ranked opponent. The most recent meeting against a ranked team took place on Friday, Nov. 12th, 2021, when the squad fell 2-3 to #3 Pitt.

The last time Syracuse beat a ranked opponent was on Nov. 27th, 2015, when the Orange swept #15 Louisville 3-0. The straight-set victory over Louisville marked the first time since 2012 the Orange have beaten a ranked opponent. Syracuse defeated No. 18 Iowa State in five sets to take the Iowa State Tournament crown during the 2012 season.

Polina Shemanova was named ACC POTW after leading Syracuse to a 2-0 weekend on the road with victories over Wake Forest and Virginia Tech. The St. Petersburg, Russia native posted double-digit kills and recorded a .404 hitting clip across the two victories. In the match against Wake Forest, Shemanova hit a season-high 28 kills. Against Virginia Tech on Sunday the outside hitter locked in 24 kills and an impressive .500% hitting clip. Shemanova also recorded a total of 33 digs, an average of 3.64 per set, and added one block and one ace.

Shemanova currently ranks second in All-Time program kills with 1,673. After Shemanova's 52 kills weekend against WF and VT she is rapidly approaching the all-time career kills record. As she needs 25 kills to tie (26 to obtain) Dana Fiume's (1,698) career record, which was set in 2000.
