SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Senior Polina Shemanova recorded 19 kills, five service aces and three blocks in Syracuse's 3-1 victory against Wake Forest in its Atlantic Coast Conference home opener. The Orange (13-2 overall, 2-1 ACC) have won six of their last seven matches. Syracuse squares off against Virginia Tech on Sunday, October 3 at 1 p.m. in the Women's Building. All fans attending games must adhere to Syracuse University's COVID-19 policy, which can be found here.
"I think we were all glad to be home," said head coach Leonid Yelin. "We were happy to win, but defensively we need to improve. I think some nerves got to us. Playing in front of a big crowd, we wanted to impress. I think as we get used to having all our fans here again, we will settle down on the court."
The Orange won the first set against the Demon Deacons, 25-19, and maintained the momentum to secure set two, 25-22. After Wake opened the third set strong, the Orange battled back to tie the set at 23. Wake then scored three of the next four points to win the set, 26-24. The Orange came back and dominated the fourth set in a 25-18 victory to win the match, 3-1.
