
Orange Dominate Hokies to Improve to 14-2

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse defeated Virginia Tech 3-0 to close the weekend with a 2-0 record. The Orange (14-2 overall, 3-1 ACC) held Virginia Tech to a .089 hitting percentage, while recording 23 blocks. Syracuse's balanced offensive attack included 10 kills from both Polina Shemanova and Marina Markova, while Elena Karakasi and Peyton O'Brien contributed 17 and 16 assists, respectively. Izzy Plummer led the Orange defensive ly at the net with seven blocks, while Abby Casiano and Naomi Franco each had five.
"We did a great job executing today," said head coach Leonid Yelin. "It was a good win to help us into this coming weekend with some momentum. We have some strong opponents coming up in Notre Dame and Louisville. There are still somethings to clean up before those matches, but we are going to enjoy this win."
In the first set, the Hokies jumped out to a 4-1 lead before Syracuse scored four straight to tie the match and then used an 11-3 run to take control of the set. Markova had two kills and Casiano had a kill and a block to help the Orange open up the lead.
After Virginia Tech started set two by taking a 6-2 lead, Viktoriia Lokhmanchuk and Polina Shemanova put away three kills each and the Orange tied the match at eight. The teams then went back and forth in scoring resulting in a 14-14 tie until Syracuse took control and scored 11 of the next 14 point for the victory and a 2-0 lead in the match. During the final stretch, Marina Markova posted two kills, combined with Izzy Plummer on a block, and closed the match with two service aces.
Syracuse opened set three with a 9-1 run and dominated throughout to secure a 25-13 victory and win the match in straight sets.

Syracuse hwill travel to play at Notre Dame on Friday, October 3 at 7 p.m., followed up by a Sunday match at No. 3 Louisville. Both matches will be streamed on ACCNX.
