SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse women's volleyball team was defeated by Pittsburgh, 3-0 (24-26, 24-26, 19-25), Friday afternoon at the Women's Building in an ACC matchup. The loss snaps a five-match winning streak for the Orange (14-7, 6-2 ACC).
Anastasiya Gorelina led Syracuse with a match-high 16 kills. Jalissa Trotter produced a team-high 25 assists and Belle Sand notched a match-leading nine digs. Santita Ebangwese finished with 10 kills and three blocks.
Nika Markovic and Stephanie Williams led Pittsburgh (14-4, 7-0 ACC) with 14 kills each. Kamalani Akeo added a match-high 42 assists.
How It Was Decided
Pitt overcame a 22-19 deficit and used back-to-back kills from Williams to take the first set. Gorelina led the Orange with nine kills.
'Cuse trailed 24-22 in the second set and used an Ebangwese kill followed by a Panther error to tie it up at 24. Pittsburgh answered with two straight kills to win, 26-24.
With set three tied at 10, the Panthers used a 13-5 scoring run to pull away and held on late to take the set 25-19. Ebangwese produced five kills for Syracuse along the way.
Coach's Thoughts
"As a team, we feel like we had a really good game plan," said head coach Leonid Yelin. "We did not execute as well as we hoped. In the first two games we had opportunities and unfortunately we did not use them."
Of Note
Gorelina continues to thrive in ACC play. The outside hitter has led the Orange in kills for seven of eight conference matches this season.
What's Next?
Syracuse travels to Georgia Tech on Friday, Oct. 20 to take on the Yellow Jackets in a conference match.
