Orange take down highest ranked opponent in school history
SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Syracuse volleyball team upset No. 15 Louisville in three sets (25-23, 25-22, 25-15) on Senior Day, marking the first time ever the Orange have beat the Cardinals since the first meeting between the two programs in 1982.
Â
The Orange improve to 23-8 and 14-6 in conference play, with Syracuse handing Louisville its second ACC loss and sixth overall loss of the season. The only other ACC loss Louisville encountered this season was against No. 22 North Carolina.
Â
The three-set sweep marks the first time since 2012 the Orange have beaten a ranked opponent. Syracuse defeated No. 18 Iowa State in five sets to take the Iowa State Tournament crown during the 2012 season.
Â
The seniors made their final mark on the home court, with Nicolette Serratore and Silvi Uattara each racking up 13 kills. Serratore also collected 13 digs, recording her 17th double-double of the season. Monika Salkute posted six kills, seven digs, and one ace in the three sets. Gosia Wlaszczuk dished out 30 assists and a match-high seven total blocks.
Â
The Syracuse front row out-blocked Louisville 12 blocks to six, holding Louisville to a mere .145 hitting percentage on the afternoon.
Â
The two teams battled back and forth to begin the first set, with Louisville leading Syracuse by no more than three points in the first 15 points of play. Kills by Uattara and sophomore Leah Levert knotted the game up at the 17 and 18-point marks. Down by two at the 22-20 mark, the Orange took off on a 4-0 run to set up a game point advantage, 24-22. A kill by Uattara sealed a 25-23 victory for the Orange in the opening set.
Â
The second set started off similar to the first, with neither team being able to grasp a controlling lead. The Orange, however, picked up the momentum heading into the final points of the set. Up by two, 18-16, Syracuse held its ground for the rest of the set, outlasting the Cardinals in the final points off of a Louisville service error and a block by Uattara and freshman Santita Ebangwese to take a 25-22 win in the second set.
Â
The third set was all about the Orange, as Syracuse came out firing on all cylinders, jumping out to an 8-4 lead and forcing a Cardinal timeout. Following the timeout, the Orange continued to build the momentum and a steady lead, taking off on an 8-0 run midway through the set to extend the Syracuse lead 17-6. The Orange refused to let up, completing a dominating win in the third set off of a Uattara kill and a block by Wlaszczuk and Levert, 25-15, capping off the 3-0 sweep.
