CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Syracuse volleyball team defeated Boston College for the second time this season, sweeping the Eagles in a 3-0 victory on Wednesday in Chestnut Hill, Mass. With the win, the Orange picked up its fifth ACC win on the season, now posting a 5-2 conference record and a 14-4 overall record.
The Orange started off the first set with a 25-21 victory and never looked back. Despite many comeback attempts by Boston College, the Eagles couldn't shake the Orange, as Syracuse went on to win the next two sets, 25-15 and 25-16. The Orange did not allow the Eagles to lead by more than three points the entire duration, with the largest Boston College lead coming when they were up 3-0 at the beginning of the second set. With the sweep, Syracuse is now a perfect 5-0 in three-set matches on the 2015 season.
Senior Nicolette Serratore posted her eighth and second consecutive double-double of the season, racking up 13 kills and 10 digs on the evening. Seniors Monika Salkute and Silvi Uattara each finished with nine kills apiece. Salkute also added a team-high and season-high 12 digs to her tally.
Senior Gosia Wlaszczuk aided the Orange hitters in the sweep, posting 38 assists on the night. Freshman Santita Ebangwese finished the win with six total blocks and six kills.
The Orange opened the match with a 6-2 lead, with back-to-back kills stemming from Salkute. Another Syracuse kill by Ebangwese stretched the Syracuse lead, 8-3. With Boston College slowly building momentum, a service error committed by the Orange brought the Eagles within three at the 10-7 mark. The Eagles continued to creep from behind, with two unforced Orange errors knotting the game up at the 13-point mark. As a result, both teams began to fight to claim the lead, but an attack error on Boston College's end put Syracuse up one at the 18-17 mark, forcing an Eagle timeout. Kills by Uattara and Serratore extended the Orange lead to three, 20-17, resulting in another Boston College timeout. Back-to-back kills by Boston College brought the Eagles within one of the Orange, 20-19, with the teams continuing to trade points yet again. A kill by Boston College's Julia Topor put the Eagles within reach of the lead at the 22-21 mark, ensuing a Syracuse timeout. Sophomore Leah Levert, however, answered with a kill, bringing the Orange within game point. A subsequent kill by Uattara capped the first set for Syracuse, 25-21.
Boston College kicked off the second set with a 3-0 lead, but the Orange quickly rebounded, tying it up at the four-point mark and stealing the lead with another kill by Uattara. The two teams began to exchange points, but the Orange started to construct a lead soon enough. Kills by Uattara and Wlaszczuk and an attack error by Boston College extended the Orange lead to four at the 11-7 mark. After trading a few more points, Syracuse continued to build the momentum, launching a major 9-1 run to put the Orange up 20-10 heading into the final points of the set. A consequent Boston College timeout couldn't cut Syracuse's momentum, as the Orange continued to extend the lead, 22-10. Syracuse allowed Boston College a few extra points, but a kill by Salkute and a kill by Uattara highlighted the final points of the game, with the Orange finishing the set, 25-15.
The third set began by the two teams exchanging points, with neither team taking control of the lead. Soon enough, however, two consecutive Boston College unforced errors and an ace by Uattara established a 9-5 Orange lead, kick-starting a 7-2 run. An attack error by the Eagles marked a nine-point lead for the Orange, 16-7, resulting in a Boston College timeout. Following the timeout, the Eagles attempted a comeback, going on 5-2 run to cut the Orange lead down to five, 19-14. An unforced Boston College error and a kill by Serratore put the Orange up 21-14. Syracuse sealed the win with another kill by Serratore and a kill by redshirt freshman Christina Oyawale, 25-16.
Syracuse returns home on Sunday, Oct. 18, taking on Virginia at 1 p.m. at the Women's Building. Admission is free.
