QUEENS, N.Y. – The Syracuse men's soccer team recorded its fourth straight shutout, defeating St. John's (0-3-1) on Saturday, Sept. 6 by the score of 1-0 at Belson Stadium. Sophomore Chris Nanco scored the game's only goal in the seventh minute to lift the Orange (4-0-0) to its first win against the Red Storm since 1996.
While Nanco provided the offense, junior goalkeeper Alex Bono made a pair of saves, one in each half, to earn the 22nd clean sheet of his career. Bono is now tied with Robert Cavicchia (2005-08) for second on the Orange's all-time shutout list. He has not conceded a goal in 360 minutes of action this season.
"When called upon, he's been Alex Bono. He's done what he needs to in order to win," head coach Ian McIntyre said. "He's really that calming presence for us. It's nice to know that when we need him, he'll make that fantastic save and he's done that the past two games. Having one of the best goalkeepers in the country behind them has to be very reassuring for the rest of the guys on the field."
That confidence was evident from the opening whistle as Nanco beat a St. John's defender and slotted the ball past Red Storm goalie Jordan Stagmiller from 20 yards out on the second shot of the game.
Nanco's goal at the 6:55 mark was part of an Orange onslaught that saw the visitors outshoot the Red Storm, 11-4, and generate eight corner kicks in the first 45 minutes.
In the second half, St. John's played with more urgency and attempted nine shots, but only one was on frame. Bono denied Daniel Herrera in the 49th minute and was not tested the rest of the night.
Meanwhile, the Orange was dangerous throughout. Syracuse attempted five shots after the intermission, including three on goal. It also earned six more corner-kick opportunities.
Stagmiller kept St. John's in the match. He made three saves in the second half and finished with four in the contest. Herrera paced the Red Storm with five shots.
Overall, Syracuse held 16-13 advantage in shots and registered 14 corner kicks to one for the Red Storm.
The Orange puts its undefeated record on the line Saturday, Sept. 13 when it hosts defending national champion Notre Dame in the ACC opener for both teams. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at the SU Soccer Stadium. The match will be televised live in Central New York on Time Warner Cable SportsChannel.
Match Notes: The 2014 campaign marks the first time in school history Syracuse has opened a season with four consecutive shutouts … Bono now has 27 career wins, tied with Rick Fatscher (1982-85) for third on the SU all-time record list … The win snapped St. John's 15-game series unbeaten streak. Prior to Saturday, the Red Storm was 12-0-3 against the Orange dating back to 1997 … Syracuse extended its winning streak versus non-conference opponents to 15 games. The Orange is 18-2-0 in regular-season, non-conference matches since the start of 2012.
