Syracuse's postseason run comes to an end with 2-1 loss
WASHINGTONÂ --Â No. 9 seed Syracuse led 1-0 for most of the second half, but eighth-seeded Georgetown scored two late goals on restarts and defeated the Orange in overtime, 2-1, in the third round of the NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Championship Sunday, Nov. 30 at Shaw Field.
Georgetown's Keegan Rosenberry scored on a header off a corner kick in the 80th minute to tie the match and Jared Rist headed in his first career goal 3:43 into extra time to win it for the Hoyas.
The Orange finishes the season with a 16-4-1 record, one win shy of the school single-season record for victories (17) set in 1982. Georgetown improved to 14-4-4 overall. The Hoyas will face either Notre Dame or Virginia in the NCAA quarterfinals next weekend.Â
"Today is a day to be very proud of the program and what we accomplished this year," Syracuse coach Ian McIntyre said. "When games are as tightly played as this one, a couple of restarts can be the difference. Georgetown is a wonderful team. They throw numbers forward like we do and they're very creative offensively."
Both teams had opportunities in the first half to grab the lead. Rosenberry struck the post for the Hoyas in the fifth minute. In the 19th minute, Syracuse's Julian Buescher beat Georgetown keeper Tomas Gomez, but his shot was cleared off the line by a Hoya defender.
It wasn't until the second half that Alex Halis broke the stalemate. Buescher took a short corner and flicked a back-heel pass to Halis, who took a touch and scored to the far side of the net in the 55th minute to give the Orange a 1-0 advantage.
After Halis' goal Syracuse remained aggressive and had a pair of opportunities to add to its lead, but shots by Buescher in the 75th minute and Nanco in the 77th minute sailed over the bar.
That set the stage for Rosenberry, who redirected Tyler Rudy's serve past goalie Alex Bono from the back post with 10:09 left to tie the game. The goal was the first off of a corner kick all season for the Hoyas.
In overtime, Emil Ekblom nearly sent the Orange home victorious. He had a great scoring chance 25 seconds into the extra frame, but his shot was turned away by Gomez.
Less than three minutes later, the Hoyas earned another corner kick (their ninth of the match). This time Rudy sent a shallow ball to Rist at the near post and he slotted it between Bono and the post for the winning goal.
Bono finished with four saves for the Orange, including a diving stop on Alex Muyl in the first half to keep Georgetown out of the scoring column.
Gomez earned the win for the Hoyas and made three saves.
Match Notes: Buescher's assist was his fifth of the year, tying him with three players for fifth on the Syracuse rookie assists chart … Bono surpassed 200 career saves with his four stops against the Hoyas. He has 201 saves in 59 career matches … The loss ended Syracuse's 20-game winning streak against non-conference opponents.
