WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Emil Ekblom scored his team-leading 10th goal of the season, but No. 13 Wake Forest (9-4-5, 5-1-4 ACC) scored twice in each half to record a 4-1 victory against Syracuse (10-7-1, 3-7-1 ACC) on Friday, Nov. 8 at Spry Stadium.
"It was a disappointing result after starting the game well," said SU head coach Ian McIntyre. "We were playing some good stuff, but if you make mistakes, you will get punished by teams like Wake Forest. Despite how disappointed we are, I am proud of the effort, commitment and enthusiasm that the guys put into the season."
The Demon Deacons claimed a 1-0 advantage in the 19th minute when Ian Harkes put away a rebound off a cross. Sean Okoli gave Wake Forest a two-goal advantage going into halftime when he took possession deep in the Syracuse third and bent a shot past SU goalkeeper Alex Bono.
After Wake Forest went up 3-0 in the 68th minute, Ekblom responded by beating his defender and placing a shot inside the near post past Demon Deacon goalie Andrew Harris. Ekblom's goal briefly narrowed the Wake Forest advantage to 3-1.
Kovi Konowiecki finished the scoring in the 80th minute for the hosts to produce the 4-1 final.
Bono recorded four saves on the night, while Harris made one save.
The Demon Deacons owned an 18-7 advantage in shots for the match.
With a 10-7-1 overall record, Syracuse is eligible for an at-large berth in the NCAA Championship. The 48-team bracket will be revealed at noon Monday, Nov. 18 on NCAA.com.
Match Notes: Ekblom's 10 goals are the third-most by a freshman in program history. He is the first double-digit Orange goal-scorer since Hansen Woodruff (10 goals) in 2007.
