SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Back on the road, the Syracuse women's volleyball team defeated Maryland in straight sets on Friday, Oct. 18 in an Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) match at the Comcast Pavilion in College Park, Md.
The Orange (7-12, 2-5 ACC) has now won two of its last three matches while the Terrapins (10-9, 2-5 ACC) have dropped four straight (30-28, 25-19, 29-27).
Sophomore Silvi Uattara recorded her second straight double-double with a team-high 17 kills and season-high 12 digs. Junior Nicolette Serratore narrowly missed a double-double of her own with 12 kills and nine digs. Leading the Orange defensively at the net was sophomore Monika Salkute with seven blocks.
Freshman Erica Handley passed out 40 assists and added seven digs. The 40 digs were the most by an Orange women in a three-set match since April Quigley's 42 at St. John's on Nov. 3, 2007. Junior Melina Violas led the team in digs for the fourth straight match with 15.
Four ties early in the first set gave way to a 4-0 run by the Orange for an 11-7 lead, forcing a Maryland timeout. SU maintained a four-point margin at 14-10 before the Terps responded with four points of their own to tie the score at 14-14 and force a timeout by Syracuse. Coming out of the break, the Orange tallied the next three points, but Maryland roared back to take a 21-20 advantage. At that point, neither team led by more than one until Uattara blocked an attack from Ashleigh Crutcher to give SU the set, 30-28.
Trailing 4-3 in the second, Maryland recorded the next five points to go up 8-4. The Orange came back to tie the set at 11-11 behind a kill and block from Lindsay McCabe. With Maryland holding onto a 14-12 advantage, SU rattled off the next seven points to grab a 19-14 lead. The Terps began to chip away, closing the gap to 19-18, but Syracuse ended the set on a 6-1 thanks to three kills and a block by Serratore.
Maryland took their largest lead of the match, jumping out to an 11-5 advantage to begin the third set. A pair of blocks by McCabe helped the Orange knot the score at 11-11. The Terps looked to be in control following a four consecutive points to go up 22-18, but SU outscored Maryland 6-2 over the next eight points for a 24-24 tie. Syracuse was facing set point, trailing 26-25, when Serratore and Uattara each smacked a pair of kills to give SU the set and match.
Mary Cushman paced the Terrapins with 11 kills and added six digs. Emily Fraik chipped in with seven kills, eight digs and four block assists.
Syracuse wraps up their four-match road swing at Pittsburgh on Sunday, Oct. 20 at 2 p.m.
