VESTAL, N.Y. – Freshman Jordan Vale scored his first career goal in the second half and freshman goalkeeper Alex Bono posted second consecutive shutout as the Orange men's soccer team defeated Binghamton, 1-0, on Tuesday, Aug. 28 at the Bearcats Sports Complex. With the victory, Syracuse improved to 2-0, marking the first time the Orange has started the season with consecutive wins since 2006.
"I'm really proud of our guys," SU head coach Ian McIntyre said. "It was a really tough place to get a result. We are looking forward to a couple of tough games this weekend."
In the first half, solid goalkeeping on both sides kept the match scoreless. The best chance of the opening period for SU came in the 20th minute when senior Ted Cribley sent a brilliant ball into the box that just missed connecting with Vale. Freshman Stefanos Stamoulacatos generated another offensive chance in the 32nd minute, but a diving save by Bearcat goalie Logan Calvey kept the Orange off the board.
Binghamton (0-2-0) also had its share of offensive opportunities, including Jake Keegan's run at the goal in the 30th minute. A leaping save by Bono ended Keegan's threat.
In the 57th minute, sophomore Skylar Thomas deflected a Binghamton shot out of harm's way to keep the score 0-0.
A little over two minutes after Thomas' blocked shot, sophomore Jordan Murrell sent a high corner kick into the box that found Vale, who headed the ball into the right side of the net for the match-winner at 58:13.
Syracuse outshot Binghamton for the game, 15-11, and the Orange owned a 9-4 advantage in corner kicks.
Bono made three saves to earn his second career shutout. He's the first SU true freshman keeper since Robert Cavicchia in 2005 to open the year with back-to-back clean sheets.
Adam Whitehead paced the Binghamton offense with five shots. Calvey played all 90 minutes in goal for the Bearcats and made nine saves.
The Orange returns home on Friday, Aug. 31 for a 7 p.m. match at the SU Soccer Stadium versus Niagara.
Game Notes: Murrell's assist on Vale's winner was the first of his career ... The victory snapped SU's two-game losing streak to the Bearcats ... It's first time since 2007 that Syracuse has started a season with consecutive shutouts.
