SU Falls Short in 3-1 Loss to Rutgers

East Brunswick, N.J. – The Syracuse Orange volleyball team (9-12, 1-5) fell to the Rutgers Scarlet Knights (16-6, 2-5) in four sets (13-25, 22-25, 27-25, 18-25) on Friday evening in the College Ave. Gym. BIG EAST Freshman of the Week, Silvi Uattara led the Orange offense with her third double-double performance of the season, recording 16 kills and 16 digs.
After dropping the first set 13-25, the Orange found some offensive ,but let the second set slip through their fingers 22-25, handing the Scarlet Knights a 2-0 lead heading into the third set. The Orange fought back and forth in the third set before SU called a timeout trailing by one at 21-22. A pair of kills from Monika Salkute and another from Nicolette Serratore secured a 27-25 Orange victory in the third set after an attacking error on Megan Stephenson kept SU in the game. Syracuse was helped out by eight Rutgers attacking errors in the third frame.
Salkute also assisted in the Orange offensive attack posting 11 kills on 18 swings, hitting at a .500 clip. Salkute also led at the net with a team-high seven blocks. Serratore and Melina Violas continued to share the libero responsibility, combining for 26 digs.
The Orange were unable to continue to continue their offensive strike in the fourth set, as the Scarlet Knights took the match 3-1 after SU fell 18-25 in the final frame.
Kylie Orr led the Rutgers offense with 17 kills, while Stephenson and Sarah Schmid added 16 and 12 kills, respectively. Libero Tracey Wright anchored the defense with 29 kills.
Syracuse will return home to the Women's Building to take on Louisville on Friday, Oct. 19th, squaring off against Cincinnati on Sunday, Oct. 21 at 2 p.m.
