Syracuse-Rutgers Series
Syracuse holds a 30-10-1 edge in the all-time series with Rutgers, including a 14-6 record since BIG EAST play began in 1991. The series against the Scarlet Knights is the sixth-oldest in SU football history.
SU holds a 15-5-1 advantage in games played in Syracuse, including an 11-5 record in the Carrier Dome. In the 2009 victory, linebacker Doug Hogue set a Syracuse record with 6.5 tackles for a loss of yards, earning the Walter Camp Football Foundation National Defensive Players of the Week award, and the Orange defense tied a school single-game record with nine sacks, while holding Rutgers to just 130 yards of total offense.
Defending The Dome
Syracuse has done a complete 180 at home this season. Last year, the Orange went 2-4 at the Carrier Dome. SU's only home victories were against FCS opponents Colgate and Maine. The team's saving grace was a 5-1 regular-season road record, which helped the Orange qualify for its first bowl game since 2004.
This season, Syracuse is 3-0 at home with overtime wins against Wake Forest and Toledo and a 21-14 victory versus Rhode Island. It's the first time the Orange has started 3-0 at the Dome since 2001 when it posted a 6-0 home mark on its way to a 10-3 overall record and an appearance in the Insight.com Bowl.
In The Clutch
In all three of Syracuse's wins, quarterback Ryan Nassib has led the Orange on game-winning or game-tying drives in the fourth quarter or overtime. Against Wake Forest, he rallied Syracuse from 15 points down in the final period to tie the game. He then threw the game-winning touchdown in overtime for a 36-29 win.
The following week against Rhode Island, the Orange and Rams were tied at 14 in the fourth quarter when Nassib guided the team on an 80-yard touchdown drive. He capped the march with a 12-yard touchdown pass to lift SU to a seven-point win, 21-14.
Against Toledo, Syracuse was behind 27-23 when Nassib connected with Alec Lemon for a touchdown and a 30-27 lead with 2:07 left in regulation. The Rockets eventually forced overtime, but Nassib and the Orange gained 15 yards on seven plays to set up the game-winning field goal.
For the season, Nassib is 30-of-34 (.882) for 304 yards and five touchdowns in the fourth quarter and overtime. He is 22-of-24 (.917) for 236 yards and four touchdowns in the fourth quarter and overtime in SU's three victories.
Ruling the Red Zone
Since Doug Marrone took over the program and hired Scott Shafer as defensive coordinator, Syracuse has allowed its opponents to score 82.4 percent of the time in the red zone. However, Orange foes have only come away with touchdowns 54.9 percent of the time. Syracuse has allowed just six touchdowns in 15 forays by opponents into the red zone.
Magic Number
Since defensive coordinator Scott Shafer took over in 2009, the Orange defense has held its opponent to less than 100 yards rushing 10 times and Syracuse is 8-2 in those games. Including its 36-29 season-opening victory, in which Wake Forest managed just 80 yards rushing on 43 attempts (1.9 per attempt), the Orange has won five straight when holding the opposition to less than 100 yards on the ground.
Krautman Active Leader In Field Goal Percentage
Ross Krautman leads all active FBS placekickers in field goal percentage. He's made 23 of his 25 career attempts (.920). Krautman was 18-of-19 (.947) as a freshman in 2010, tying Gary Anderson's single-season school record for makes and Anderson's Orange record for consecutive field made (16). This season, Krautman is 5-of-6 (.833) with his miss against Wake Forest, a blocked kick in the season opener.
Against Toledo, Krautman tied his career high with four field goals, including the game-winning 27-yarder in overtime.
