LOUISVILLE, Ky. – With four matches remaining, the Syracuse University volleyball team (17-9, 6-4) faces two monster road tests this weekend at Louisville (17-7, 9-1) and at Cincinnati (18-8, 8-2).
As the top eight teams make the BIG EAST Tournament, the Orange currently sits in fifth place. Teams 5-11 are separated by just two games.
Louisville has already clinched a berth into the tournament as the Cardinals have a 9-1 league mark. Cincinnati is right behind Louisville at 8-2 and needs one more win to secure a spot in the tournament hosted by Marquette. Both Louisville and Cincinnati were 2010 NCAA Tournament participants.
THE WEEKEND AHEAD:
THREE AWAY: Sam Hinz is three block assists away from setting the new Syracuse record for block assists in single-season. Stephanie Schlink holds the current record of 136 which was set in 1996.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS:
LOUISVILLE'S Lola Arslanbekova leads the BIG EAST in kills (424) and kills per set (4.99). The 2011 BIG EAST Preseason Player of the Year paces the Louisville attack that averages the highest team hitting percentage in the conference at .268 and the highest kills per set average at 13.41.
CINCINNATI is currently riding a five match winning streak. It has been a season on streaks for the Bearcats as they lost their first three matches but then won the next seven. Another three match losing streak followed, and then UC put together six wins in a row. This current five match streak came after two straight conference losses.
Syracuse and Louisville square off on Saturday at 2:00 p.m., while the match with Cincinnati is scheduled for Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
