LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Syracuse University volleyball team (17-10, 6-5) won the first set but dropped the next three and lost to Louisville (18-7, 10-1) on Saturday afternoon (25-12, 21-25, 11-25, 18-25) at the KFC Yum! Center.
With Syracuse leading 6-5 in the opening frame, the Orange used a 15-5 spurt to take control of the set. Lindsay McCabe had three kills in that span and SU was helped out by five Louisville service errors.
The Cardinals' offense then found its rhythm, led by 2011 BIG EAST Preseason Player of the Year Lola Arslanbekova and fellow outside hitter Brooke Mattingly, who each had double-digit kills with 16 and 14, respectively.
SU had a chance to go up 2-0 with the second stanza knotted up 18-18, but Louisville used five kills in its final seven points to win the set 25-21 and even the match heading into the locker room.
U of L had the lead the entire third set and took a 25-11 decision. Syracuse then had Louisville on the ropes with the fourth set tied at 15, but an ensuing 6-1 Cardinals run followed and Louisville took a four set decision.
Sam Hinz had a team-high nine kills, while McCabe totaled a match-high six blocks. Freshman setter Emily Betteridge dished out 34 assists.
