SEATTLE, Wash. – The Orange travelled to Seattle on Thursday night in prepartion for its second game of the 2010 season. SU will face Washington on Saturday, September 11 (7 p.m. ET, Fox Sports Northwest). The game will be also be televised live on Time Warner Cable Sports. Fans can also listen to the game on Syracuse ISP Sports Network (TK-99.5 FM in Syracuse), Orange All Access. For game highlights, head coach Doug Marrone's postgame press conference and student-athlete interviews sign on to Orange All Access following the game.
Time Warner
Time Warner Cable, in cooperation with Fox Sports Northwest, will televise the game across Upstate New York on its Time Warner Cable Sports channels (Time Warner Cable Sports in Central New York (check local listings) and Albany (channel 3), and on overflow channels in both Buffalo (channel 87) and Rochester (channel 98).)
Syracuse-Washington Series
The Orange look to even out the all-time series, which UW leads 2-1. In the last meeting between the two was in 2007, a 42-12 UW win, current Orange standout linebacker Derrell Smith played running back, gaining 19 yards on five carries and had one catch for nine yards. Current Washington quarterback Jake Locker was 14-of-19 for 142 yards. This game marks the second Syracuse trip to Husky Stadium. The first game in the series was in 1973 in Seattle.
First Season-Opening Victory Since 2003
SU registered its first season-opening victory since 2003 against the Akron Zips on the road last Saturday with a score of 29-3. The Orange defense gave up the fewest points since Sept. 10, 2005 when Buffalo was shutout 31-0. The 2010 team currently ranks ninth nationally in total defense, 19th in rush defense and is tied for ninth in first downs allowed.
BIG EAST Player of the Week Honors
Junior quarterback Ryan Nassib and senior cornerback Mike Holmes earned the BIG EAST Conference Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week honors, respectively, after the Orange's 29-3 victory at Akron. Nassib completed 17-of-27 passes for 229 yards, two touchdowns and gained 58 yards on nine carries in his first career start. Holmes led the defense with six tackles, a sack for a loss of seven yards, snatched up a blocked a field goal and returned it for 57 yards to score a touchdown.
The last time Syracuse had two Player of the Week honors was 2009 (Mike Williams, offense, and Ryan Lichtenstein, special teams); the last time Syracuse won offensive and defensive awards was 2004 (Diamond Ferri, earned both honors for his performance against Boston College).
Multiple Targets for Nassib
During junior quarterback Ryan Nassib's award winning performance in the opening game of the 2010, he connected with seven different receivers. Senior receiver Aaron Weaver had two catches for 30 yards and a touchdown, junior running back Antwon Bailey caught four passes for 30 yards, while junior Van Chew caught three passes for 79 yards and one touchdown, and sophomore Alec Lemon recorded five receptions for 49 yards. Fullback Adam Harris and tight ends Nick Provo and Jose Cruz each made one reception.
Carter Ranks 19th on SU Career Rushing Record List
Senior running back Delone Carter joined the ranks on the SU career rushing record list (1,962 yards in 30 games) after gaining 91 yards on 26 carries and a touchdown against the Akron Zips last week. In his career, Carter has scored 16 rushing touchdowns. He finished the 2009 season ranked 43rd in the nation and fourth in the BIG EAST in rushing average (85.1). His 11 touchdowns ties for 10th and 236 carries are seventh on Syracuse single-season record lists. In his career, Carter has had six 100-yard rushing games including four in 2009.
The Hogue Impact
Senior linebacker Doug Hogue started 2010 right where he left off last season recording five tackles, a sack for a loss of two yards and a blocked a field goal that was returned for a touchdown in the opener at Akron. In his first year as a linebacker in 2009, Hogue recorded 72 tackles, including 16.0 for a loss of yards and 9.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery and an interception.
Marrone's Debut Season Produces Notable Numbers
Syracuse Orange head coach Doug Marrone produced noteworthy statistics that were the best in years in a number of categories during his first season at the helm. In rush defense, Marrone's 2009 squad had 101.8 ypg, his best since 1997 (101.6). A low of 12 fumbles lost were recorded, his best since 1999 (16). On average the Orange scored 21.2 ppg last season, Marrone's best in coaching since 2004 (23.9).
