VESTAL, N.Y. – Seniors Hansen Woodruff and Tom Perevegyencev both had goals for the Orange (0-1-0), but it wasn't enough as Binghamton (1-0-0) defeated Syracuse by the score of 3-2 on Tuesday, Sept. 1 in front of 2,063 fans at the Bearcats Sports Complex. The match was the season opener for both teams.
The loss snapped the Orange's nation-leading 20-game non-conference unbeaten streak and was the team's first non-conference loss since Oct. 12, 2005 against Oneonta.
Perevegyencev led the Orange with three points in the match, also recording an assist on Woodruff's second-half goal.
The Orange opened the game's scoring when Perevegyencev notched the team's first goal of the season at the 24:36 mark of the first half. The goal was set up by freshman midfielder Mark Brode and junior Geoff Lytle. Brode started the play when his pass found Lytle just inside the box. Lytle turned and slipped the ball to Perevegyencev, who remained onsides, and deposited the ball in the upper left corner of the Binghamton net to give SU the lead.
The Orange maintained its 1-0 advantage until the start of the second half when the game opened up offensively. The two teams combined for four goals in the period, including three in the opening 10 minutes.
The Bearcats tied the game less than two minutes into the second stanza on a goal by Kyle Manscuk, but Woodruff answered for Syracuse scoring a breakaway goal in the 52nd minute to put the visitors back in front, 2-1.
SU's lead was short-lived as Binghamton's Josh Sailar equalized the match with a header a little over three minutes later.
Sailar's goal set the stage for Andy Tiedt, who scored the eventual game-winner in the 80th minute, when he re-directed a Binghamton corner kick into the Orange goal. The corner kick was taken by Kyle Kucharski, who was the catalyst for the Bearcats, recording an assist on all three Binghamton goals.
Orange redshirt freshman goalie Evan Johnson made his first collegiate start in the contest and recorded two saves. His counterpart, Jason Stenta, also made two stops in the match to earn the victory. In addition, SU redshirt freshman defender David Neumann recorded a save when he blocked a shot in the second half to keep game tied at 2-2.
The Orange returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 5 when it hosts Cornell at the SU Soccer Stadium in its home opener. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. and admission to the match is free.
Match Notes: Brode's assist on Syracuse's first goal was the first point of his career … Senior Pete Hill made his 41st consecutive start in the contest … In addition to Johnson, junior Daniel McGowan, senior Sean Summerville, junior Manny Sevillano, redshirt freshman Colin Haggerty and Brode each made their first career starts in the match … Neumann and redshirt freshman Charles Schoening made the first appearances of their careers when they entered the game late in the first half.
