SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse (14-5, 3-1) volleyball team turned in a dominant performance on Tuesday night at Manley Field House, sweeping Colgate (6-10, 3-1), 3-0, to extend its home undefeated streak to seven matches. Senior middle blocker Sarah Morton also made history during the match, setting the SU record for career solo blocks with 195.
“This win was a team effort and everyone played well tonight,” assistant coach Carol LaMarche said. “Playing so well allowed us to change the lineup and get a lot of different girls playing time.”
On her record setting night, Morton led the Orange at the net both offensively and defensively with 11 kills and four total blocks. The team co-captain is also on the cusp of another career record, currently 12 total blocks shy of setting the SU all-time mark.
Senior outside hitter Kacie MacTavish was second on the team with nine kills, while freshman middle blocker Samantha Hinz added five. Sophomore outside hitter Erin Little was deadly accurate for the Orange during the third frame, placing all six of her attack attempts in Colgate's court. Setters Laura Homann and Hallie Morse also both hit 1.000 while splitting the setting duties, recording 19 and 16 assists, respectively.
MacTavish was the defensive leader for the back row, tallying 16 digs while senior defensive specialist Shanetha McLaurin had five and Homann contributed four. Hinz ranked second on the team with three total blocks while junior Hayley Todd, senior Annabelle Pellerin and junior Mindy Stanislovaitis each had one.
Colgate scored the first three points of the opening set, but the Orange quickly responded, taking a five-point lead with a 14-6 run. Syracuse would expand its lead to 11-points, taking the first set, 25-14.
SU carried its momentum into the second set, starting with a 4-1 run to gain a lead it would never relinquish. Leading 12-9, Lefebvre served seven-straight points, stretching the lead, 19-10. A four-point run by the Raiders shrunk the deficit, but the Orange maintained its edge, winning, 25-18.
The third set commenced in similar fashion with Syracuse opening on a 5-1 run and held a lead between four and eight points over the Raiders for the entirety of the set, eventually solidifying the sweep with a 25-18 game three victory.
Syracuse's all-around effort stifled the Raiders, limiting them to less than six kills and negative hitting percentages in each of the first two sets. The Orange hit .352 for the match while restricting Colgate to a .062 team hitting percentage.
SU looks to continue its winning ways over the weekend, with visits to St. John's on Saturday, Oct. 10 at 2 p.m. and Connecticut on Sunday, Oct. 11 at 2 p.m. on tap.
