SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Freshman receiver Marcus Sales scored his first career touchdown and senior kicker Patrick Shadle connected on two 44-yard field goals in a 55-13 setback to Penn State. Shadle moved into seventh-place all-time on SU’s career field goals made list with 29, surpassing Tim Vesling. Redshirt freshman Kevyn Scott tallied a team-best eight tackles (six solo, two assisted) in his first career start for Syracuse.
Sophomore kick returner Max Suter continued to rise up the Orange’s career kickoff return yardage list. Suter returned five kicks on Saturday for 111 yards. He is now fourth all-time on the school’s kickoff return yardage list with 1,544.
Penn State quarterback Daryll Clark finished 10-of-21 with 163 and two touchdowns. PSU tailback Evan Royster compiled 101 yards on 13 rushes, while Jordan Norwood made five catches for 113 yards and two touchdowns.
Penn State started the first drive at its own 34-yard line. On the second play, senior tackle Nick Santiago forced the fumble as Clark rolled out of the pocket to his left. Junior Arthur Jones scooped up the loose ball and the Orange took over on the opponents’ 36-yard line. Both Santiago and Jones registered their second career forced fumble and recovery, respectively.
On the next play, senior tailback Curtis Brinkley turned the ball back over to Penn State. Brinkley bobbled Cam Dantley's lateral pass and Nittany Lions’ Lydell Sargeant recovered it on the PSU 45.
Immediately following the exchange, the Nittany Lions scored on a 55-yard touchdown heave to Jordan Norwood to take the early lead, 7-0, at 13:40 of the first quarter. With 7:45 remaining in the opening period, Clark hit Deon Butler on a 17-yard touchdown pass at the back corner of the endzone, giving Penn State the 14-0 advantage. The Nittany Lions went up 21-0, capping off their 10-play, 62-yard drive on a one-yard draw play up the middle by Dan Lawlor at 2:54 of the first quarter. PSU increased the lead to 28-0 when reserve quarterback Pat Devlin threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Butler with 12:11 remaining in the first half.
On the next drive, the Orange took over on its own 29 and on the first play from scrimmage, Dantley threw a 26-yard toss to freshman wideout Grant Mayes for his first career reception. Senior tight end Ben Maljovec caught his first career pass on a seven-yard pass from Dantley down to the PSU 30-yard marker. Shadle put three points on the board for Syracuse on a 44-yard field goal with 8:11 left in the second quarter.
PSU added to its lead by way of a 24-yard Devlin-Norwood connection to finish off a 13-play, 79 yard drive with 2:32 to play in the second frame, making the score 35-3.
With less than two minutes in the second quarter, Syracuse sophomore punter Rob Long booted a 58-yard punt and on the return senior fullback Tony Fiammetta jarred the ball loose from Anthony Scirrotto and senior safety Bruce Williams pounced on it at PSU’s 24-yard line. Shadle connected on another 44-yard field goal to cut into PSU’s lead, 33-6, with 50 seconds remaining in the half.
Penn State came back 49 yards on the ensuing drive, closing out the first half of play on a 52-yard field goal from Kevin Kelly, giving PSU a 38-6.
The Nittany Lions padded their lead, 45-6, with 5:19 remaining in the third quarter on a two-yard touchdown scamper from Stephfon Green.
On SU’s next possession, sophomore running back Doug Hogue kept the Orange drive alive, moving the chains on fourth-and-one for SU’s second time in the contest. On the ensuing play, Dantley hooked up with sophomore receiver Donte Davis for a 34-yard connection up the middle of the field. Davis’ career-long reception set the Orange up for its first touchdown of the game on fourth-and-eight. Dantley averted PSU’s pressure and hit freshman Marcus Sales for an 11-yard touchdown to make the score to 45-13. The touchdown, at 1:23 of the third quarter, marked Sales’ first career scoring reception.
Penn State’s Chaz Powell returned the following kickoff 69 yards to the SU 29. Powell’s dash enabled the Nittany Lions with a Collin Wagner 43-yard field goal 16 second to go in the third stanza, making the score 48-13.
The Nittany Lions final tally came at 2:50 of the final period on a 33-yard toss from Paul Cianciolo to Derek Moye, finalizing the score at 55-13.
The Carrier Dome crown of 45,795 was the largest since the Orange beat Notre Dame in the final home game of the 2003 season.
Syracuse will play its third consecutive game at the Carrier Dome against Northeastern University on Saturday, Sept. 20 at 3:30p.m.
