Cavicchia Makes Eight Saves in 0-0 Tie at #9/13 USF

TAMPA, Fla. – Syracuse (5-2-3, 2-2-1) ended #9/13 USF’s five-game winning streak on Friday, Oct. 3, playing the Bulls (6-1-2, 4-0-1) to a 0-0 double-overtime tie at the USF Soccer Stadium. Senior goalie Robert Cavicchia (North York, Ontario) made a season-high eight saves in the contest to preserve the draw.
The Bulls had won its last five outings dating back to early September, including four straight conference victories, before the Orange put the first blemish on their league record.
Syracuse posted its seventh shutout in 10 games this year, the most blankings for an Orange squad in one season since the 1994 club also recorded seven shutouts.
Both teams attempted six shots in the opening half with the Bulls forcing Cavicchia to make four saves. In USF’s most dangerous sequence, Cavicchia thwarted Zak Boggs and Yohance Marshall on consecutive chances in the 33rd and 34th minutes, respectively.
Two of SU's six shots were on target in the first period as senior Spencer Schomaker (Seattle, Wash.) forced USF keeper Jeff Attinella to make a save in the 22nd minute and classmate Kyle Hall (Toronto, Ontario) tested him in the 25th minute.
Syracuse continued to attack in the second half as junior Tom Perevegyencev (Budapest, Hungary) recorded SU’s third shot on goal 50 seconds into the period. Schomaker also continued to create scoring chances, recording SU’s final three shots in regulation.
After neither team attempted a shot in the first overtime, the Bulls outshot the Orange, 3-0, in the second extra session. Jordan Seabrook had USF’s best chance, but Cavicchia was there again, making a save in the 106th minute to ensure the stalemate.
Schomaker’s two shots on goal led the Orange. Boggs and Kevon Neaves paced USF with three shots on goal apiece. Attinella played all 110 minutes between the posts for the Bulls and finished with four saves.
The Orange continues its road trip with a division match against #2/2 St. John’s on Wednesday, Oct. 8. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Belson Stadium.
