PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Running back Curtis Brinkley led the Orange offense, rushing for 51 yards on 12 carries, in a 38-7 loss at #15/16 Rutgers. Quarterback Perry Patterson completed seven-of-16 passes for 49 yards in his final game at Syracuse. He finished the year ranked second on SU’s single-season chart for pass attempts, fourth in completions and tied for ninth in touchdown passes. Quarterback Andrew Robinson took over for Patterson and completed all three of his passes for 20 yards and one touchdown.
Safety Joe Fields led the Orange with 10 tackles. Linebackers Kelvin Smith and Jerry Mackey each added nine tackles in their final game.
Rutgers took the opening kick and returned it for an apparent touchdown. However, an illegal block penalty brought the ball back to the Rutgers 12-yard line. The Orange had a chance to force a three-and-out but a personal foul penalty kept the Scarlet Knights drive alive. Six plays later, Rutgers’ Ray Rice ran it in for a touchdown from 10 yards out.
On Syracuse’s first drive, Patterson was hurried and the Scarlet Knights’ Courtney Greene intercepted the tipped pass. On RU’s first play of the possession, quarterback Mike Teel connected with Kenny Britt for a 38-yard touchdown and a 14-0 lead.
Rutgers struck again in the second quarter. Teel and Britt connected again for a 28-yard touchdown to cap a seven-play, 51-yard drive as the Scarlet Knight claimed a 21-0 advantage.
Rutgers opened the scoring in the second half as fullback Brian Leonard ran the ball in from two yards out. Rutgers added a field goal to extend its lead to 31-0.
Robinson took over on offense on the following drive. During the drive, he eluded the rush and marched the Orange into Rutgers’ territory, running the ball four times for 35 yards. Robinson then completed his first collegiate pass, catching his own pass for a four-yard gain. Two plays later, Robinson connected with Jawad Nesheiwat for a 14-yard touchdown. It was the first career touchdown for Robinson and it was a personal-long reception for Nesheiwat.
Rutgers added another touchdown late in the game as Leonard scored from two yards out with eight seconds remaining. Leonard finished the game with 106 yards and two touchdowns on 19 carries.
Tight end Tom Ferron and wide receiver Rice Moss led the Orange with two receptions for 16 yards. Ferron ended the year with 30 catches, tying him with Tony Gabriel for second in school history for receptions by a tight end in a season.
