SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Sophomore Joscie Kaup recorded 18 digs and senior Kelly Duan added a team-high 14 kills as the Syracuse Orange lost to No. 10 Notre Dame, 3-0 (30-17, 30-23, 30-20), in BIG EAST volleyball action tonight at Manley Field House.
SU was held to just a .043 hitting percentage in the loss. For the Fighting Irish, preseason BIG EAST Player of the Year Lauren Brewster was held in check with just four kills, but Mallorie Croal registered 17 kills, Lauren Kelbley had 15, and Adrianna Stasiuk added 11 in the win. Libero Meg Henican dug 26 balls in three games.
In game one, Notre Dame jumped out to a 12-5 lead with the help from a pair of kills from Stasiuk. An SU attack error later in the game increased the lead to 20-10, and Notre Dame took control of the game from there, winning game one 30-17.
Notre Dame started quickly again in game two, getting ahead early 5-0. At 13-8, an Irish attack error gave SU a side out, and senior Kristen Conway served the next three points, closing the gap to 13-12. A couple of kills from Kelbley and Croal increased the lead for Notre Dame to 15-12, and the Irish rode the three-point lead all the way to 23-20. Notre Dame then went on a 7-3 run to close out the game thanks to a pair of Kelbley kills.
The Irish jumped on the Orange again in game three, scoring the first four points. SU climbed back to 7-6 on one of Duan’s kills, but an Irish 10-point run on Brewster’s serve created an insurmountable lead for the Orange at 17-6, and Notre Dame swept the match, 3-0.
Sophomore Jen Malcom had five total blocks for SU (10-6, 2-1 BIG EAST), while Conway chipped in with 14 digs. Senior Aila Dommestrup dished out 30 assists, while senior Katie Allen registered four block assists.
Brewster notched seven total blocks for the Fighting Irish (10-1, 2-0 BIG EAST), while setter Ashley Tarutis had 35 assists and 11 digs.
SU looks to bounce back when it hosts DePaul on Sunday, Oct. 2, in BIG EAST action at Manley Field House. The game is slated for 2:00 p.m.
