SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Senior Katie Allen recorded a career-high 11 block assists and had 12 kills to lead the Syracuse Orange to a 3-1 (28-30, 30-18, 30-17, 30-13) victory against DePaul this afternoon in BIG EAST volleyball action. Four SU players tallied double-digit kills to pace the SU attack.
Allen’s hitting percentage on the day was .647, also a career best. Senior Kelly Duan had a match-high 19 kills in the win. Senior Kristen Conway notched a double-double with 13 kills and a season-high 16 digs. Sophomore Cheryl Cobbina added 11 kills for the Orange, while senior Aila Dommestrup dished out 54 assists.
In game one, the two teams remained even throughout the match. The Blue Demons took their largest lead of the game at 16-13, but SU fought back and took its only lead of the game at 23-21 with the help from Conway and Dommestrup kills. DePaul battled to tie the score 26-26, then it scored two points on an SU service error and a Morgan Ingersoll kill to take a 28-26 lead, and went on to win by that difference, 30-28.
SU began game two by scoring the first three points, capped by one of Conway’s kills. After DePaul put two points on the board to make it 3-2, SU rallied to score four-consecutive points, due in part to a couple of Blue Demon attack errors. SU increased its lead to 22-13, and even added to the cushion and won game two 30-18.
The Orange built a slight lead in midway through game three at 14-12. Sophomore Jen Malcom put down one of her five kills, and then stepped to the service line and rattled off seven-straight points to give SU a 22-13 advantage. The Orange would eventually take the game, 30-17.
Game four was as tied as early as 3-3, but a DePaul attack error put SU up by one, and it would never relinquish the lead after that. Two more attack errors and a Duan kill put the Orange up 7-3. Cobbina added one of her kills to make the score 12-6, then SU went on a six-point run on the serve of senior Kathryn Dercher, who had 11 digs in the match, to give the Orange an 18-7 lead. SU would take that lead to the end, winning the final game.
For the Blue Demons (3-11, 0-3 BIG EAST), Ellen Hayes notched 14 kills and seven digs, while Ingersoll added 12 kills. Christina Correa had 11 kills, while Mandi Caputo compiled 45 assists.
SU (11-6, 3-1 BIG EAST) dominated at the net, totaling 16 blocks to DePaul’s five. The Orange also held the Blue Demons to a .105 hitting percentage, while SU hit .388.
The Orange takes to the road this upcoming weekend with three away matches. On Friday, Oct. 7, SU will face Robert Morris for the second time this season. The two teams met at the Kent State Invitational, with SU sweeping the Colonials, 3-0. On Saturday, Oct. 8, the Orange faces Pittsburgh at 2:00 p.m., and then takes on West Virginia on Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
