Volleyball Loses To No. 7 Louisville, 3-1

LOUSIVILLE, Ky., Nov. 13, 2005 – Senior Kristen Conway recorded a team-high 17 kills while adding nine digs, but the Orange lost to No. 7 Louisville, 3-1 (31-33, 30-20, 30-20, 30-22), in both team’s regular season finale today at Cardinal Arena.
Senior Kelly Duan notched her 10th double-double of the season with 15 kills and 11 digs. Senior Aila Dommestrup registered 47 assists and 11 digs, while sophomore Joscie Kaup added 21 digs. Sophomore Cheryl Cobbina had 12 kills in the loss.
In game one, the two teams stayed close to each other throughout. SU scored the first point of the game on a block by sophomore Jen Malcom. The Orange did not lose that lead until Louisville went up 20-19. The largest SU lead came at 17-14 when Conway put down one of her kills. The Cardinals stormed back and scored six of the next eight points to take the 20-19 edge. A service error and a Duan kill put SU back ahead, 21-20. The teams traded points all the way to 28-28. Ana Yartseva notched a kill to give UL the advantage, but Duan responded with one of her own to notch the game at 29-29. Lena Ustymenko got the point back on a kill, but SU benefited from a Louisville service error to deadlock the score again, 30-30. Rui Liu put UL back on top, 31-30, but Conway started a three-point rally with a kill to give the Orange the game one win. Conway gave SU the lead, 32-31, with her second kill in a row, and then Dommestrup ended the game with one of her own.
With the score in its favor, 10-8, in the second game, Louisville went on a decisive seven-point run to tie the match. Jennifer Hoffman was the catalyst of the stretch with two kills and assisting on a pair of blocks. SU could not climb back into the game, and the Cardinals won 30-20.
Louisville took control of the third game right away, taking an early 6-2 lead. The Cardinals increased its lead to 14-8, but SU climbed right back into the game with four unanswered points. Malcom tied the score for SU, 16-16, with one of her kills. UL exploded from there, scoring 14 of the last 18 points in the game to win, 30-20.
In game four, UL jumped out to an early 3-0 lead as Stephanie Marsh put down a kill and assisted with Hoffman on a block. The Cardinals maintained the three-point lead to 15-12. Yartseva recorded a service ace, and then Ustymenko added a kill to put UL up 17-12. Louisville kept that lead, and even built on it to take a 30-22 win in the final game.
For the Cardinals (25-1, 13-1 BIG EAST), Ustymenko tallied a match-high 21 kills and 12 digs. Hoffman compiled 17 kills and nine block assists. Yartseva registered 12 kills and 19 digs.
SU (24-9, 11-3 BIG EAST) will head back to Louisville on Friday, Nov. 18, for the 2005 BIG EAST Championships. Pairings will be announced later in the evening as regular season play concludes.
