STORRS, Conn., Oct. 22, 2005 – Seniors Kelly Duan and Kristen Conway both totaled 20 kills as the Orange beat Connecticut, 3-1 (30-23, 30-23, 24-30, 30-20), in BIG EAST action this afternoon at Gampel Pavilion. Conway's season high in kills helped SU win its sixth in a row, which builds on its season best.
Senior Aila Dommestrup dished out 54 assists in the win. Sophomore Joscie Kaup recorded 25 digs.
UConn started the first game with a 4-0 run, and increased its lead to 8-2 on a Heather Ashley solo block. Duan came back with two kills, and sophomore Cheryl Cobbina added another one to make the score 8-5. SU would climb back into the game, eventually tying it 11-11 on a Conway kill. After the Huskies took a timeout, the Orange scored six of the next nine points to take a 17-14 lead. UConn responded with a 4-1 run to deadlock the game 18-18. SU went on a decisive four-point run to take a 22-18 lead, and went on to win the first game, 30-23.
In game two, it was the Orange who took the early 4-0 advantage. SU built its lead to 11-3 on junior Erin McQuillin’s kill. That lead would hold up, even though the Huskies pulled within one point at 14-13. The Orange would steadily pull away to take the game 30-23.
Midway through the third game, the two teams were tied 16-16. A four-point run by the Huskies, aided by two SU attack errors, put UConn up 20-16, and would prove to be the decisive stretch. The closest SU would get was at 21-18 when senior Katie Allen put down one of her seven kills. A couple of three-point runs gave UConn a comfortable cushion, and it went on to win 30-24.
The final game was tied 5-5, but SU scored the next six points to take hold of the game. Three miscues by the Huskies, combined with two SU kills and a Duan service ace contributed to the run. That lead would prove to be enough, and the Orange would even build on it at the end of the game to take the 30-20 win.
For UConn (10-11, 2-5 BIG EAST), Megan Crawley and Sarah Singer both had 12 kills. Ashley added 11 kills, while Jenny Neelands registered 41 assists.
Syracuse (18-7, 6-2 BIG EAST) looks to go 3-0 on the weekend when it heads to St. John’s tomorrow for a 2:00 p.m. contest.
