Syracuse Sweeps Colgate To Stay Undefeated

HAMILTON, N.Y. – The Syracuse volleyball team continued its winning ways Tuesday night, Sept. 14, as it swept Colgate, 30-28, 30-13 and 30-15. Syracuse improves its record to 9-0 on the season, while Colgate is now 3-4.
In the opening game against the Raiders, the Orange jumped out to a 10-3 lead, and eventual built the advantage to 18-11. Colgate stormed back with a 13-4 rally to even the game at 24-24.
SU responded by scoring the next two points on Colgate errors. Colgate was able to recover and even the score again at 26-26 and 27-27. The Orange would then win three of the next four points to close out the game with a 30-28 victory.

The Orange got out to an early lead in game two and never trailed the rest of the way. Following a 5-0 run to open the game, SU took its largest lead of the night, 23-5. With the score 9-5, junior Kelly Duan began serving and would serve the next 14-straight SU points, including three service aces. Syracuse would win game two, 30-13.
The Raiders took their first lead of the match early in game three with the score 2-1 and then against at 3-2 and 4-3. SU would quickly answer with five-straight points to take the lead, 8-4. Colgate pulled to within two points at 9-7, but Syracuse went on a six and eight-straight point rally to win the game 30-15.
In addition to her three service aces, Duan recorded four kills in game two.
Freshman Ellen Bruegge led the team with eight kills and made four digs. Junior Kathryn Dercher was the leading setter with 25 assists, and freshman Joscie Kaup had a team-leading 16 digs. Freshman Jen Malcom led the team with six total blocks and recorded seven kills in the match. Malcom’s five block assists set a new season-high for a three-game match.
As a team, Syracuse set season-highs for a three-game match in block assists (12), digs (52) and aces (11).
Up next, the Orange travels to Denver, Colo., for the Denver Tournament. SU will face Denver on Friday, Sept. 17, at 7:30 p.m. On Saturday, Syracuse plays Washington State at 11:00 a.m. and Radford at 5 p.m.
