SU Football Loses, 27-6, at #15/14 West Virginia

MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – The Syracuse football team lost, 27-6, to No. 15/14 West Virginia on Thursday night at Mountaineer Field in Morgantown, W. Va. Sophomore quarterback Perry Patterson finished the night with a career-best 249 yards on 23-for-37 passing.
Junior wide receiver Steve Gregory set career bests with five receptions and 58 yards in his first game back after missing four contests due to a thigh injury. Senior running back Walter Reyes did not play due to flu-like symptoms. It was the first time since the opening game of the 2001 season, Reyes’ redshirt freshman year, that he did not play. Junior tailback Damien Rhodes finished the night with 65 yards on 21 carries and a touchdown.
The Orange opened the game with a drive to the West Virginia 25-yard line, but senior kicker Collin Barber missed the 42-yard field goal attempt to the right. The Mountaineers took the ensuing possession 63 yards on 11 plays and Brad Cooper put WVU on top 3-0, with a 29-yard field goal. On SU’s next possession, the Mountaineers blocked a 46-yard field goal attempt and answered with a 23-yard touchdown pass from Rasheed Marshall to Chris Henry.
After Syracuse muffed a punt, Marshall would throw his second touchdown pass to Henry with 53 seconds left in the first half to give the Mountaineers a 17-0 advantage. West Virginia capitalized on SU’s mishaps on special teams. The Mountaineers scored all 17 points in the first half following a missed field goal, a blocked field and the muffed punt.
Senior safety Diamond Ferri forced his third fumble of the year and recovered it at the WVU 40-yard line with 11 seconds left in the half. After a 16-yard completion to senior wide receiver Jared Jones the Orange attempted a 41-yard field goal, however Barber missed this one to the left. Jones finished with a team-best 59 yards on five receptions.
The Orange opened the second half by forcing the Mountaineers to go three and out. The SU offense took the ensuing possession 70 yards, capped with a two-yard touchdown run by Rhodes. The point-after attempt sailed into the left upright and out, making the score 17-6. The Orange would only get two other possessions in the second half.
The Mountaineers would tack on a 26-yard field goal and a 22-yard touchdown pass to Charles Hale. Marshall finished the night with 144 yards on 7-for-12 passing and three touchdowns. He also had 95 yards rushing on 14 carries. Jason Colson led the WVU rushing attack with 114 yards on 18 carries.
Junior tight end Joe Kowalewski finished with three receptions for a career-best 56 yards. Kowalewski is the first SU tight end to catch a pass in five straight games since Stephen Brominski caught a pass in each of the last five games of the 1999 season.
The Orange had six possessions end at the WVU 30 yard-line or better. Ferri led the SU defense with 13 tackles, including six solo. Junior defensive end James Wyche finished with 11 tackles, including five solo and two for a loss.
The Orange hosts new BIG EAST foe Connecticut on Saturday, Oct. 30 at 1:30 p.m.
