SU Volleyball Loses BIG EAST Opener

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse volleyball team lost its BIG EAST season opener, 3-0 (30-23, 30-24, 30-17), to Notre Dame on Saturday, Oct. 2. The Orange are now 13-5 overall and 0-1 BIG EAST. The Fighting Irish improve to 6-5 overall and 1-0 in BIG EAST play.
Senior Morgan Jones turned in the best offensive performance for the Orange, hitting .400 on seven kills on 15 attacks with only one error. Sophomore Erin McQuillin recorded a .300 hitting percentage on five kills and two errors on 10 attempts. McQuillin also had three block assists. Junior Kelly Duan finished with a team-high 10 kills, one assist, five digs and two total blocks. Junior Aila Dommestrup recorded 27 assists, one kill, three digs and one block assist. Freshman Joscie Kaup had a team-high 11 digs.
Jones moved into eighth place on the career attacks list with 2,448 in her career, passing Aimee Mask (1989-92).
For the Irish, Lauren Brewster recorded a team-high 11 kills. She also had four digs and seven total blocks with two solo blocks and five block assists. Carolyn Cooper also recorded seven total blocks with one solo block and six block assists. Ashley Tarutis had 25 assists, and Meg Henican had a team-high 16 digs.
As a team, SU was only able to hit .017, while Notre Dame had a team hitting percentage of .198. Notre Dame recorded 16 team blocks to SU’s seven, and had six service aces compared to Syracuse’s zero.
The Orange begins a five-match road stretch next weekend. SU plays at Marist on Friday, Oct. 8 at 6:00 p.m. SU then travels to Seton Hall on Saturday, Oct. 9 at 2:00 p.m. and Rutgers at 2:0 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 10.
